"... a new medical study has concluded that the threat of a crushing hangover cannot be removed by making sure that beer comes before, or after, wine.
The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on Friday, went further claiming that hangovers were also not made more bearable by sticking to one type of drink thereby debunking another of the barfly's favorite: "Grape or grain but never the twain.""

FDA Increases Winery Inspections

FDA Takes a Growing Interest in Winery Safety | News | News & Features | Wine Spectator:

"While winery inspections are not new, they’re being ramped up under the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act, according to FDA spokeswoman Patricia El-Hinnawy.

The federal law mandates that the FDA inspect all food processing establishments. The frequency of inspections is based on safety risk and compliance history. While wineries are considered low risk because the fermentation process kills pathogens, all food facilities must be inspected within seven years and at least once every five years after that. “The FDA may be conducting more inspections [at wineries] than it has done in the recent past, in order to meet the [law’s] requirements,” El-Hinnawy said."

Drink 3 to 5 Glasses of Red Wine to Prevent Heart Attacks

I was originally disappointed when I first scanned this Medical News Today article, Resveratrol May Replace Aspirin As Heart Protector; Longevinex® First Branded Resveratrol Pill Successfully Tested During Heart Attack.

As a red wine lover, my disappointment turned to joy when I read this:
The amount of resveratrol in 3 to 5 glasses of red wine is only about 3-5 milligrams, but the heart protective effect is believed to be produced by the total polyphenolic molecules in a glass of dark, aged red wine, ~60 milligrams per 5-ounce glass. The optimal health benefit derived from red wine is achieved at a consumption level of 3-5 glasses, which would be considerably more expensive than a resveratrol pill, and certainly pose the problem of inebriation.
In a nutshell, I get to drink red wine to, pardon the pun, to my heart's content!

This MSNBC News article, Cheers! 6 ways a little booze does the body good, gives six good reasons to rationalize your drinking habit. In summary:
  1. Women who drink occasionally may live longer.
  2. Moderate drinking may actually protect your brain — especially if you’re a woman.
  3. Women who drink moderately are less likely to develop high blood pressure.
  4. A few drinks a week might keep the heart doctor away.
  5. White wine may help you breathe better.
  6. Drinkers exercise more than teetotalers — and the more people drink, the more they exercise.
I'm not endorsing drinking, and thought you'd be interested in this collection of reported health benefits.

Series About Wine And Your Heart

I ran across this information packed and thought provoking series about wine and your heart. It consists of 3 parts:

Ellen Mack, M.D., M.P.H., the author, says:

The first two parts (see Part 1 &Part 2) of the series Wine and your Heart examined some of the vast epidemiological and scientific evidence that moderate consumption of wine is associated with decreased cardiac mortality. Is this information being put to good use?

For me, this all means, drink a little to be healthy. Cheers!

Dementia - Mod Drinking Good - Heavy Drinking Bad

I guess I'm more prone to dementia :( This article, Can Wine Fight Dementia? - A Glass a Day in the Golden Years May Protect Against Dementia, Study Says, a "glass or two of wine a day – but no more -- appears to protect older adults from developing dementia, researchers reported here at the International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease." It's sad to say, but according to this study's criteria, I guess I'm a heavy drinker, yikes!

Epidemiological Reasons To Drink Alcohol For Health

As an avid wine drinker, I'm always on the lookout for reasons to justify my habit and hobby. I think most folks accept that a couple of glasses of red wine a day can be good for the heart. This American Journal of Epidemiology abstract says there are additional benefits of drinking alcohol, Light to Moderate Alcohol Consumption and Disability: Variable Benefits by Health Status. Bottomline, Moderate alcohol consumption may help seniors keep disabilities at bay reports that "light to moderate drinkers in good health had a lower risk for developing new disabilities, compared with both abstainers and heavy drinkers."

Wine contains a substance called resveratrol. It's reported to offer some health benefits by cleaning blood vessels and to reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke. Dr. Norrie talks about the wine he makes, that contains much more of the substance than most other wines, in this MSNBC News video, "Bottoms up for a healthy heart."

A word of caution, the purported health benefits in people are yet to be definitively proven.

---  the original post follows below  ---

I love my wine, but I hate it when reports like these come out. This news article posted on Ivanhoe's Medical Breakthroughs, tells us to worry about the metal ion content of wines, "Wines Found Contaminated With Metals." From where I sit, there doesn't appear to be much I can personally do until producers label the metal ion content on the bottle. Until then, I think I'll keep drinking wine the way I do now. Bottoms up! Sante'

Drink Red Wine - Live Longer !?

This is such a fun topic for me, and this fountain of youth article is a fun read. I love to drink red wine, and sure, who wouldn't want to live longer! I'm staying optimistic that the animal studies suggesting that red wine or a substance in it, resveratrol, can really contribute to longevity. It might be a very long time until we really know for sure. But heck, I'm all for drinking more red wine for now. Bottoms up! Cheers!
