Parents, grandparents to blame for half of child poisonings, study says - CNN

Read the full article:  Parents, grandparents to blame for half of child poisonings, study says - CNN

Here's the scoop:

"The study found that as caregivers take their meds out of tough-to-open containers and put them in easy reach places for convenience, they are inadvertently contributing to some 50,000 emergency room visits by kids every year who swallow dangerous pills when adults aren't paying attention."

To prevent child poisoning, CDC says meds should be 'up and away' - USA Today

To prevent child poisoning, CDC says meds should be 'up and away' - USA Today:

"Budniz said that the message should be "up and away and out of sight" so kids aren't tempted by medicines.

Carr says caretakers should also make sure they don't have medications lying around in purses and coats, and to remember that "child resistant" does not mean "child proof." The government standard for child resistant is that 4 out of 5 children can't open the container within 10 minutes.

"With 64,000 children ending up in the emergency room for medicine poisoning each year, this is just a call that people must be extra vigilant," Carr said."

Why a Safety Device That Can Stop Overdoses by Kids Isn’t Widely Used - ProPublica

The Fix Isn’t In: Why a Safety Device That Can Stop Overdoses by Kids Isn’t Widely Used - ProPublica:

""If flow restrictors work, they should be placed on all liquid products," said Dr. G. Randall Bond, a pediatrician and poison expert who has consulted with drug makers. “We need a technological change to get us to the next level of safety.”"

Eating eggs that are not handled with proper care can cause food poisoning, also called foodborne illness. Salmonella, an organism that causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, and fever, can be found on both the outside and the inside of eggs that look perfectly normal.

Stay safe this Spring and holiday season.

Kids Getting Into Medicines At Alarming Rate (video)

500,000 Times Each Year a Child gets into Medicine or gets the Wrong Dose:

"Safe Kids Worldwide released a new research report that found kids are getting into medicine at an alarming rate. Every minute of every day, a poison control center receives a call about a potential medicine poisoning for a child age five and under. And 67,000 times each year, or every eight minutes, a young child goes to the emergency room for medicine poisoning. This is a 30 percent increase over the past ten years."

Drug Poisoning Increase In Children

Pharmaceutical drug poisonings rise in children - latimes.com:  'via Blog this'

The LA Times article gives a nice highlight and summary of the much longer research article published in the Journal of Pediatrics, The Growing Impact of Pediatric Pharmaceutical Poisoning.

To give you an idea of what they found,  I'm sharing just a portion of their conclusion:

"We conclude that the problem of pediatric medication poisoning is getting worse, not better. Past preventive efforts have proved to be inadequate. More children are exposed, more are seen in an ED, more are admitted, and more are injured each year."
Not surprisingly, there are mentions that medical bottles and packages may need to be redesigned to limit how fast a child can consume medication, and that drugs should be stored in locked cabinets, and unused medications need to removed from the home.

They call carbon monoxide the silent killer. That's because fuel burning devices can give off this poisonous gas that you can't see or smell. Learn more about this dangerous gas in this CDC video, "The Quiet Killer." I'm posting this because we're entering the holiday season. A time when family and friends gather. It's really important to pay attention to the potential causes of carbon monoxide poisoning, and prevent a catastrophe from happening.

Thanksgiving Alert - Cooked Turkey Can Still Cause Food Poisoning!

While cooking your turkey properly makes it safe to eat, it's really only safe to eat for a short while after being cooked and stored properly. The danger lies is what you do with it after it's been cooked, as outlined in this news clip, "Thanksgiving Chefs Beware: Cooking The Turkey May Not Prevent Food Poisoning." The key point is a "live" form of the bacterium, C. perfringens, is killed by cooking, but its spores survive will survive a trip through the oven. The spores aren't harmful if eaten, and they will return to their vegetative state ("live") if warm turkey meat is left too long. For a safe Thanksgiving meal, follow these essential tips . . .

  1. Cook the Thanksgiving turkey to 165 degrees.
  2. Chill leftovers quickly after a meal is finished.
  3. Cut meat off the bone and store perishables in shallow pans.
  4. Reheat leftover turkey to 165 degrees and bring gravy to a boil.

Opiates Can Kill Kids!

Nobody wants to see kids hurt! So it's important that you read this NBC News article to avoid such a situation, "Prescription opiates and kids: One pill can kill - Glut of drugs fuels reports of poisonings among very young children." Oxycontin and other opiates can poison your kids. Here are some things you need to do . . .

  1. Don't spill or drop pills, and if you do, it's critical that you pick them all up, so that they're not eaten by your children.
  2. Be sure your painkillers are secure, because one pill is enough to harm or kill.

Deadly Drinking In College - Drinking Games - Alcohol Deaths

It's time to go back to college. There will be drinking. Just don't become a death statistic. This NBC article, "Drinking games prove deadly to college kids," warns that the number of alcohol-poisoning deaths is on rise. The danger is bigger than just having too much alcohol in the body. Just as important is that it impairs judgment and motor skills, and leaves folks prone to assaults. I did a little more research and ran across the following resources, they're quite excellent . . . have a good time, be safe, and don't become a statistic. Be informed.

Additional alcohol resources:

  1. Alcohol and Public Health - a CDC website
  2. College Drinking, Changing The Culture - a website created by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

Beware These Poisonous Recipes!

It turns out that there are some published recipes out that will poison you. This very interesting, comprehensive, and educational ABC News article is a good read for novice chefs, "OOPS: Magazines Recall Poisonous Recipes - Confusion Between Spices and Poisonous Herbs Spells Trouble for Cooks." There are a number of reasons why a simple and elegant recipe can become poisonous, either the published recipe got it wrong, or you as the cook will make an error . . .

  1. The dose makes the poison. Toxic substances in small amounts don't matter, but if you put too much in, you get poisoned (e.g., cherry pits).
  2. Confusing common names. If you misread, or the recipe incorrectly gets an ingredient name wrong, you might end up using a poisonous substitute (e.g., substituting 'grass pea' instead of the common vegetable pea can cause serious damage).
  3. Parts matter. Using the wrong part of the plant can be bad for you. (e.g., green parts of rhubarb).

Starting Methadone? It could kill you - You must read this!

This is the first time I've heard about this. If you or someone you know is starting on Methadone, you must read this. Methadone deaths are rising because many physicians don't know how to prescribe or adjust the dosage during the critical first week of methadone treatment. There are so many issues that put new methadone patients at risk, that I won't even try to summarize them here. You're better off reading this well-written NY Times article, "Methadone Rises as a Painkiller With Big Risks." For example, contributing risks include: incorrect initial dosage chart, the unique property of the drug that makes it difficult to monitor and adjust dosages during the start of therapy, an FDA-approved package insert, etc . . .

The article is accompanied by a video clip and excellent multimedia presentation of methadone death statistics.

Salmonella - Peppers? Tomatoes? Both? - It is not so clear

Bottomline, it still isn't so clear which vegetable, or who, or where is to blame. If you read this article, it becomes clear that we really don't know for sure what's going on. In the end it could be something far more complex than just blaming peppers from Mexico. For more details, read this Washington Post article, "FDA Officials Narrow Salmonella Warning To Mexican Peppers."
