FDA - Transdermal Patches - MRI Burning Risk (Podcast)

A quick re-reminder that not all transdermal patches come with labelling warning patients about the burning risk while undergoing an MRI exam. Listen to this FDA Podcast, Risk of Burns during MRI Scans from Transdermal Drug Patches with Metallic Backings, or read the transcript "Risk of Burns during MRI Scans from Transdermal Drug Patches with Metallic Backings."

Duck - It Is A Sandbag - Flying In The MRI Room

Duck! Watch out for that flying sandbag in the MRI room. It turns out some sandbags contain metal, and they can go flying near an MRI maching, reports this FDA Medical Device Safety report, "Danger: "Sandbag" in the MRI Room." According to the article, "a patient underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) while she had a sandbag on her groin to help facilitate hemostasis after a procedure that involved femoral artery puncture. The staff assumed that the bag contained only sand. As the study began, the sandbag was pulled into the MRI coil, damaging the system. Fortunately, the patient wasn’t injured, according to the report." Bottomline, the unlabeled sandbag was found to contain ferromagnetic iron shavings and pellets. This sandbag, originally purchased for use in the hospital’s physical therapy department, shouldn’t have been brought into the MRI room. Additional MRI Safety Resources:

Epidemiological Reasons To Drink Alcohol For Health

As an avid wine drinker, I'm always on the lookout for reasons to justify my habit and hobby. I think most folks accept that a couple of glasses of red wine a day can be good for the heart. This American Journal of Epidemiology abstract says there are additional benefits of drinking alcohol, Light to Moderate Alcohol Consumption and Disability: Variable Benefits by Health Status. Bottomline, Moderate alcohol consumption may help seniors keep disabilities at bay reports that "light to moderate drinkers in good health had a lower risk for developing new disabilities, compared with both abstainers and heavy drinkers."

Wine - For Enjoyment Or Metal Ion Poisoning?!

Updated March 7, 2022

The original link broke.

You can still read about the same topic here:

---  the original post follows below  ---

I love my wine, but I hate it when reports like these come out. This news article posted on Ivanhoe's Medical Breakthroughs, tells us to worry about the metal ion content of wines, "Wines Found Contaminated With Metals." From where I sit, there doesn't appear to be much I can personally do until producers label the metal ion content on the bottle. Until then, I think I'll keep drinking wine the way I do now. Bottoms up! Sante'
