Supreme Court Decision Limiting the Authority of Federal Agencies Could Have Far-Reaching Impacts for Health Policy (KFF):  https://www.kff.org/private-insurance/supreme-court-decision-limiting-the-authority-of-federal-agencies-could-have-far-reaching-impacts-for-health-policy/

---  the original post follows below  ---

According to the article:

"The ruling will likely have seismic ramifications for health policy.

A flood of litigation — with plaintiffs like small businesses, drugmakers, and hospitals challenging regulations they say aren’t specified in the law — could leave the country with a patchwork of disparate health regulations varying by location."

"Health policy leaders say patients, providers and health systems should brace for more uncertainty and less stability in the health care system. Even routine government functions such as deciding the rate to pay doctors for treating Medicare beneficiaries could become embroiled in long legal battles that disrupt patient care or strain providers to adapt."

Making Progress in Protecting Consumers from Unsafe Supplements | FDA Voice

Read Dr. Ostroff's (FDA) full comments: Making Progress in Protecting Consumers from Unsafe Supplements | FDA Voice:

"We want to expand our use of criminal investigation and enforcement tools to address serious safety-related violations and cases of intentional fraud; and further build strategic investigatory and enforcement collaborations with the Federal Trade Commission, Department of Justice, and state governments, including state health departments and attorneys general.

Ultimately our top priority is to protect the consumers who want to improve, not damage, their health and have a right to expect that dietary supplements will be safe for them and their families."

Read the full article: Multiple cups of coffee a day linked to lower risk of death - UPI.com:

"Unlike previous studies, however, researchers also considered smoking. When taking cigarettes out of the mix -- because many people who smoke also drink a lot of coffee -- the data showed that 1.1 to 3 cups per day led to an 8 percent drop in mortality and 3.1 to 5 cups per day had a 15 percent lower risk of death. Those drinking five or more cups were 12 percent less likely to die."

World Health Day 2015: A Global Focus on Food Safety | FDA Voice

Read the full post:  World Health Day 2015: A Global Focus on Food Safety | FDA Voice:

"Food safety is a public health issue that affects all nations – from the most advanced to the most poor. World Health Day, observed on April 7 each year to mark the anniversary of the 1948 founding of the World Health Organization (WHO), gives us an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made to address the need for strong food safety systems, and on the enormous challenges that lie ahead.

The global importance of this issue is reflected in this year’s World Health Day theme: “Food Safety: From Farm to Plate, Keep it Safe.”  Keeping food safe, from farm to table, is at the core of our mission as an agency and at the heart of the preventive, risk-focused food safety system envisioned by the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)."

Healthcare Industry: The Top Target of Cyber Attacks - Pharmaceutical Compliance Monitor

Read the full article: Healthcare Industry: The Top Target of Cyber Attacks - Pharmaceutical Compliance Monitor:

". . . it might come as a surprise that most data breaches occurred within the medical/healthcare category. According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, 600+ breaches have taken place through October 2014—up nearly 26 percent from 2013. Healthcare providers and organizations account for approximately 42 percent of all breaches with 7.4 million personal records exposed this year alone.

Looking at these numbers it’s hard to argue against the vulnerability of any organization, regardless of their stature. Today, with advanced tools at hackers’ disposal, it’s truly not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ a data breach will materialize."
