Daily Low-Dose Aspirin Linked to Reduced Risk of Certain Cancers - US News

Read the full article: Daily Low-Dose Aspirin Linked to Reduced Risk of Certain Cancers - US News:

"Taking low-dose aspirin every day may lower the overall risk of cancer by 3 percent, mostly because of larger reductions that were seen in the risk for colon and gastrointestinal tumors, researchers are reporting.

But the benefit was only seen after six years of taking aspirin almost daily, the study authors said."

"A new study adds to the evidence that low-dose aspirin, known to reduce the risk for heart disease, may also reduce the risk for pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer has a 93 percent fatality rate, and the National Cancer Institute estimates there will be about 46,000 new cases and 40,000 deaths from the disease this year."

Information for Consumers (Drugs) > Use of Aspirin for Primary Prevention of Heart Attack and Stroke - FDA:

"Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, affects tens of millions of people in the United States.  Consumers and patients who do not suffer from cardiovascular disease sometimes consider taking aspirin to reduce the possibility of having a heart attack or stroke.  Reducing the possibility of having a first heart attack or stroke is called primary prevention.  The FDA has reviewed the available data and does not believe the evidence supports the general use of aspirin for primary prevention of a heart attack or stroke.  In fact, there are serious risks associated with the use of aspirin, including increased risk of bleeding in the stomach and brain, in situations where the benefit of aspirin for primary prevention has not been established."

Taking Aspirin at Night May Boost Heart Benefits - NYTimes.com

Taking Aspirin at Night May Boost Heart Benefits - NYTimes.com:

"Ultimately the researchers found that morning platelet activity was reduced to a much greater degree when the aspirin was taken at night. The timing of the aspirin, however, had no impact on morning blood pressure levels, which was something else the researchers measured."

Aspirin May Help Prevent Certain Kinds of Cancer (video)

This is a nice interview and discussion triggered by the latest published findings in the medical journal, Lancet.

The findings strike a chord with me because about 20 years ago, I started taking a baby aspirin every day. Back then there was sparse information available, and I started in hopes of preventing gastrointestinal cancers that my parents succumbed to.

Painkillers Linked To Erectile Dysfunction

It might be worthwhile thinking about cutting back on the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Men who regularly take pain relievers such as ibuprofen and aspirin may be at increased risk for erectile dysfunction, new research suggests, published in this Journal of Urology article, Regular Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug Use and Erectile Dysfunction.

I was happy to hear about the latest findings suggesting that Aspirin May Reduce Risk of Colon Cancer (Video).

Both my parents had gastrointestinal cancers, so for the last 15 years or so, I've been taking a baby aspirin everyday, based on my sense that there was some suggestive evidence that it could be protective.

Here's to aspirin and colon health!

Drink 3 to 5 Glasses of Red Wine to Prevent Heart Attacks

I was originally disappointed when I first scanned this Medical News Today article, Resveratrol May Replace Aspirin As Heart Protector; Longevinex® First Branded Resveratrol Pill Successfully Tested During Heart Attack.

As a red wine lover, my disappointment turned to joy when I read this:
The amount of resveratrol in 3 to 5 glasses of red wine is only about 3-5 milligrams, but the heart protective effect is believed to be produced by the total polyphenolic molecules in a glass of dark, aged red wine, ~60 milligrams per 5-ounce glass. The optimal health benefit derived from red wine is achieved at a consumption level of 3-5 glasses, which would be considerably more expensive than a resveratrol pill, and certainly pose the problem of inebriation.
In a nutshell, I get to drink red wine to, pardon the pun, to my heart's content!

Aspirin Fights Colon Cancer (video)

Endoscopic image of colon cancer identified in...Image via Wikipedia

I've been following the news about the possible beneficial effects of aspirin (ASA) in preventing colon cancer for a number of years now. Now I'm really excited about the news in this ABC News video, "Fight Cancer With Aspirin." In summary, "Taking aspirin regularly may increase survival rate for those with colon cancer."
