A new technology offers treatment for HIV infection through a single injection - World Pharma News

According to the article:

"Currently, the researchers explain, there is no genetic treatment for AIDS, so the research opportunities are vast. Dr. Barzel concludes: "We developed an innovative treatment that may defeat the virus with a onetime injection, with the potential of bringing about tremendous improvement in the patients' condition. When the engineered B cells encounter the virus, the virus stimulates and encourages them to divide, so we are utilizing the very cause of the disease to combat it. Furthermore, if the virus changes, the B cells will also change accordingly in order to combat it, so we have created the first medication ever that can evolve in the body and defeat viruses in the 'arms race'.

Based on this study we can expect that over the coming years we will be able to produce in this way a medication for AIDS, for additional infectious diseases and for certain types of cancer caused by a virus, such as cervical cancer, head and neck cancer and more."

CRISPR kills HIV and eats Zika 'like Pac-man'. Its next target? Cancer | WIRED UK

Read the full article:  CRISPR kills HIV and eats Zika 'like Pac-man'. Its next target? Cancer | WIRED UK:

"These new enzymes are variants of a CRISPR protein, Cas13a, which the UC Berkeley researchers reported last September in Nature, and could be used to detect specific sequences of RNA, such as from a virus. The team showed that once CRISPR-Cas13a binds to its target RNA, it begins to indiscriminately cut up all RNA making it "glow" to allow signal detection."

Doctors Cash In on Drug Tests for Seniors, and Medicare Pays the Bill - WSJ - WSJ

Read the full article: Doctors Cash In on Drug Tests for Seniors, and Medicare Pays the Bill - WSJ - WSJ:

"Doctors are testing seniors for drugs such as heroin, cocaine and “angel dust” at soaring rates, and Medicare is paying the bill.

It is a roundabout result of the war on pain-pill addiction.

Medical guidelines encourage doctors who treat pain to test their patients, to make sure they are neither abusing pills nor failing to take them, possibly to sell them.

Now, some pain doctors are making more from testing than from treating."

FDA Warning - GermBullet Is An Unapproved Flu Remedy

FDA warns company over unapproved flu remedy - US News and World Report:

"The Boca Raton, Fla.-based company advertises the product as a "proprietary blend of 11 organic botanicals." The company's website claims that "an FDA recognized virology lab" tested the formula and "confirmed that it has the potential capability to kill cold and flu viruses."

But FDA regulators say the mixture has never been reviewed as safe and effective and the company is violating drug safety regulations. All new drugs marketed in the U.S. must be submitted for approval to the FDA before they can be sold to consumers. The GermBullet is sold online through retailers like CVS.com and at a handful of small pharmacies and natural food stores in Florida."

Battle Common Cold With Zinc

Fred Ott's Sneeze (film by William K.L. Dickson)Image via WikipediaI take public transportation to work, and get a daily dousing of sneezing and hacking from fellow commuters. For that reason, I'm always on the lookout for any interventions that will keep me healthy or shorten the duration of anything contagious that I might contract.

This Washington Post article caught my eye, Got a cold? Think zinc, report concludes.

In summary:

Zinc (lozenges or syrup) is beneficial in reducing the duration and severity of the common cold in healthy people, when taken within 24 hours of onset of symptoms. People taking zinc are also less likely to have persistence of their cold symptoms beyond seven days of treatment. Zinc supplementation for at least five months reduces incidence, school absenteeism and prescription of antibiotics for children with the common cold.
