Simple Ways To Prevent Falls In Older Adults - NPR.org

Read the full article:  Simple Ways To Prevent Falls In Older Adults - NPR.org

According to the article:
"What are some of the interventions you've used that can help seniors?
You can do so many things. First of all, I tell everybody you've got to do some balance training. Tai chi is probably the best exercise to prevent falls, but whatever works for you. And, interestingly, just walking does not reduce your risk for falling. So a lot of doctors will say, "Just get out and walk 20 minutes every day, and that'll keep you safe. That'll help you stay healthy." Walking is great for your heart; it's great for your brain; it's great for lots of it. But in order to really reduce your risk for falls, you've got to do something specific to balance."

Eating a Handful of Nuts May Prevent Major Diseases | TIME

Read the full article: Eating a Handful of Nuts May Prevent Major Diseases | TIME:

"People who ate about about a handful (20g) of any type of nuts—tree nuts, like hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans and almonds, and peanuts, which are legumes—a day had nearly 30% lower heart disease rates compared to people who didn’t eat nuts, a conclusion previous data supported. But they also had a 15% lower risk of cancer and a 22% lower risk of dying prematurely of any cause. People who ate nuts regularly also cut their risk of dying from respiratory illnesses by nearly half, and they reduced their risk of diabetes by nearly 40%."

Daily Low-Dose Aspirin Linked to Reduced Risk of Certain Cancers - US News

Read the full article: Daily Low-Dose Aspirin Linked to Reduced Risk of Certain Cancers - US News:

"Taking low-dose aspirin every day may lower the overall risk of cancer by 3 percent, mostly because of larger reductions that were seen in the risk for colon and gastrointestinal tumors, researchers are reporting.

But the benefit was only seen after six years of taking aspirin almost daily, the study authors said."

Read the full article for cold/flu prevention tips: Consumer Updates > Get Set for a Healthy Winter Season - FDA.gov: "

While contagious viruses are active year-round, fall and winter are when we're most vulnerable to them. This is due in large part to people spending more time indoors with others when the weather gets cold.

Fortunately, we can fight back with several FDA-approved medicines and vaccines."

FDA > Information for Consumers (Drugs) > Use of Aspirin for Primary Prevention of Heart Attack and Stroke

---  the original post follows below  ---

Information for Consumers (Drugs) > Use of Aspirin for Primary Prevention of Heart Attack and Stroke - FDA:

"Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, affects tens of millions of people in the United States.  Consumers and patients who do not suffer from cardiovascular disease sometimes consider taking aspirin to reduce the possibility of having a heart attack or stroke.  Reducing the possibility of having a first heart attack or stroke is called primary prevention.  The FDA has reviewed the available data and does not believe the evidence supports the general use of aspirin for primary prevention of a heart attack or stroke.  In fact, there are serious risks associated with the use of aspirin, including increased risk of bleeding in the stomach and brain, in situations where the benefit of aspirin for primary prevention has not been established."

The Fix Isn’t In: Why a Safety Device That Can Stop Overdoses by Kids Isn’t Widely Used - ProPublica:

AHA, ACC Stand Firm in Support of Cardiovascular Risk Calculator

AHA, ACC Stand Firm in Support of Risk Calculator - MedPage Today:

"The dust-up over the new cardiovascular disease prevention guidelines -- already named "Calculator-gate" -- prompted the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology to stage a public defense at a hastily assembled press briefing here.

Although there are four guidelines in the new prevention package it is the assessment of risk -- the so-called risk calculator -- and the recommendation that statins be used as primary prevention that have drawn fire."

Kids Getting Into Medicines At Alarming Rate (video)

500,000 Times Each Year a Child gets into Medicine or gets the Wrong Dose:

"Safe Kids Worldwide released a new research report that found kids are getting into medicine at an alarming rate. Every minute of every day, a poison control center receives a call about a potential medicine poisoning for a child age five and under. And 67,000 times each year, or every eight minutes, a young child goes to the emergency room for medicine poisoning. This is a 30 percent increase over the past ten years."

New Recommendations - Child Food Allergy Prevention

A committee from the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology (AAAAI) published new recommendations for parents aimed at helping prevent food allergies in young children.

Primary Prevention of Allergic Disease Through Nutritional Interventions. The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice. Volume 1, Issue 1 , Pages 29-36, January 2013

The journal article above, is pretty detailed and isn't a casual quick read.  The following might be a better quick introductory article:

Aspirin May Help Prevent Certain Kinds of Cancer (video)

This is a nice interview and discussion triggered by the latest published findings in the medical journal, Lancet.

The findings strike a chord with me because about 20 years ago, I started taking a baby aspirin every day. Back then there was sparse information available, and I started in hopes of preventing gastrointestinal cancers that my parents succumbed to.

Updated May 29, 2024

Call me paranoid. Many years ago, I bought a bunch of KI (potassium iodide) for our household. We live in earthquake country, the San Francisco bay area, and there are certainly nuclear plants in CA.

If you're thinking about taking KI, you'll want to read up on it first:  Potassium Iodide (KI) - CDC.gov

Battle Common Cold With Zinc

Fred Ott's Sneeze (film by William K.L. Dickson)Image via WikipediaI take public transportation to work, and get a daily dousing of sneezing and hacking from fellow commuters. For that reason, I'm always on the lookout for any interventions that will keep me healthy or shorten the duration of anything contagious that I might contract.

This Washington Post article caught my eye, Got a cold? Think zinc, report concludes.

In summary:

Zinc (lozenges or syrup) is beneficial in reducing the duration and severity of the common cold in healthy people, when taken within 24 hours of onset of symptoms. People taking zinc are also less likely to have persistence of their cold symptoms beyond seven days of treatment. Zinc supplementation for at least five months reduces incidence, school absenteeism and prescription of antibiotics for children with the common cold.

Preventive Anti-HIV Drug Use - Cautious Prescribing

In a nutshell:
The report provides interim guidance to health-care providers based on the reported results of the trial, which indicated that tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) plus emtricitabine (FTC) taken orally once a day as preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is safe and partially effective in reducing HIV acquisition among MSM when provided with regular monitoring of HIV status and ongoing risk-reduction and PrEP medication adherence counseling.
