"Sleeping pills such as Ambien and Restoril may double someone's risk of a car crash — even after their effects should have worn off — and may raise the risk as much as having too much to drink, researchers reported Thursday.

A close look at medical and driving records showed that people who took any one of the three popular sleeping aids had anywhere between a 25 percent and three times higher risk of being involved in an accident while driving."

"A U.S. biotech company pioneering tablets containing embedded microchips that can tell if patients have taken their medication has raised a further $172 million, showing investor interest in its ingestible and wearable technology.

Privately held Proteus Digital Health, which is working with drugmakers including Novartis and Otsuka, said on Tuesday the funding was one of the biggest U.S. private financings this year and the largest in the digital health sector.

Proteus already has European and U.S. approval for its "smart pill" technology system, in which a tiny sensor is embedded in a tablet and linked to a patch worn on the patient's abdomen."

FDA Must Consider Dropping Age Limit For Morning After Pill

The FDA let politics cloud its judgment when it denied teenage girls over-the-counter access to the Plan B morning-after pill, a federal judge said Monday as he ordered the FDA to let 17-year-olds obtain the medication. The judge ruled the agency had improperly bowed to political pressure from the Bush Administration when it set 18 as the age limit in 2006. U.S. District Judge Edward R. Korman in New York instructed the agency to make Plan B available to 17-year-olds within 30 days and to review whether to make the emergency contraceptive available to all ages without a doctor's order, reports this Washington Post news article, "FDA Ordered to Rethink Age Restriction for Plan B - Judge Says Politics Influenced Policy on the Contraceptive." What a polarizing firestorm this is going to create! What do you think?!

The New iPill - Intelligent pill for drug development

Healthcare IT News reports, "Philips iPill targets treatment for digestive tract diseases" This is a pretty interesting little drug delivery device, fill it up with medication, and it can be programmed to release it as it travels along.

Philips is also known for its FDA-approved "first camera pill" of 2001 used "for diagnostic applications." This new drug delivery device is intelligent pill technology named the 'iPill,' and is designed to aid drug development focusing on new therapies for gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, such as colon cancer. Here are some facts about the iPill . . .

1. The iPill is swallowed and passes through the GI tract naturally
2. It can be programmed to release medicine
3. It measures the local acidity along the GI tract and can report its current location
4. It also reports local temperatures, and does so wirelessly

Oxycontin and other opiates can poison your kids. Here are some things you need to do . . .

1. Don't spill or drop pills, and if you do, it's critical that you pick them all up, so that they're not eaten by your children.

Drugs.com Pill Identifier:  According to a Google search, this is one of the most comprehensive databases available. You can search by imprint code (letters/numbers on the pill), shape, and color to see photos and get detailed medication information.

Another Free Pill Identifier - for your smart phone or PDA

A lot of folks are interested in free drug pill identifiers. I just learned about this free software from Epocrates, "Epocrates Rx." I'm not an Epocrates user, and I haven't personally downloaded or used this software. From what I can tell, you can register for a free account, and then download the free "Rx" software.

The free software is designed for use with smart phones and PDAs. What's neat is that the software provides:

Promising Exercise Pill - I could be an exercised couch potato! (video)

I admit it, I'm a couch potato. But guess what, in the future I might be able to take an exercise pill, be a couch potato, and my body will act as if I've been exercising. Sweet! This MSNBC article makes me wish this drug was available now, "Exercise pill? Drug shows promise."

Identify Those Drugs - Handy Pill Identifier

At some time, we've all needed to try and identify a pill, tablet, capsule, or medication that somehow got separated from the original bottle. Or maybe you found some drugs that aren't even yours. The clues you need are:

1. Imprints, marks, or shapes on the drug. Drugs.com has a drug imprint lookup page.
2. Shape of the drug
3. Color of the drug
4. A guess of the name of the drug can help too

Now you need to turn your clues into some possible matches. Drugs.com offers a Pill Identification Wizard. You simply provide some of the clues mentioned above, and with any luck you're shown a list of possible matches with photos (if they're available) and drug manufacturers. Drugs.com quite responsibly adds, "As a general rule, we should all periodically check our medicine cabinets for any expired, re-bottled, or unidentified pills. The safest bet is to keep all medications in their original bottles or packets, with pertinent labeling and instructions attached, to avoid confusion and mistakes." Be safe, be well!
