Alcohol Deaths Take Lives of Working-Age Americans

I'm surprised at the research findings.

"Alcohol consumption is a leading preventable cause of death in the US, and death rates from fully alcohol-attributable causes (eg, alcoholic liver disease) have increased in the past decade, including among adults aged 20 to 64 years."

"The findings of this cross-sectional study suggest that an estimated 1 in 8 total deaths among US adults aged 20 to 64 years were attributable to excessive alcohol use, including 1 in 5 deaths among adults aged 20 to 49 years. The number of premature deaths could be reduced with increased implementation of evidenced-based, population-level alcohol policies, such as increasing alcohol taxes or regulating alcohol outlet density."

CDC: 25 states, including Va., reporting widespread flu | WTVR.com:

"The number of states reporting widespread seasonal flu activity jumped from 10 to 25 last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

Widespread activity was reported in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington state and Wyoming, according to the CDC’s weekly flu advisory report, covering the week ending December 28.

“Widespread” means that more than 50% of geographic regions in a state — counties, for example — are reporting flu activity. It addresses the spread of the flu, not its severity."

Fireworks Safety & Injuries - Be Safe!

Take caution with fireworks!

Fireworks injuries sent more than 5,000 people to U.S. emergency departments in the 30 days surrounding the Fourth of July last year, with firecrackers, aerial explosives and homemade devices causing most of the harm, consumer safety experts said. About 60 percent of the estimated 8,700 people treated for injuries in 2012 were hurt between June 22 and July 22, according to new figures from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Mobile Usage While Driving - Increasing In The US

My latest pet peeve, seeing people driving while on the phone or using their phone.

The Distracted American Driver - NYTimes.com:

"Despite increasing media attention and laws forbidding the practice, more Americans than ever are using their cellphones to talk and send text messages while driving, a new study shows.

According to the research, nearly 70 percent of Americans ages 18 to 64 said they had chatted on their phones while driving in the past 30 days, and about 30 percent said they had sent text messages while behind the wheel. Drivers in seven European countries were also included in the study, and the numbers showed that the practice appears to be far more common in the United States than overseas."

College-age adults average 9 alcoholic beverages when they binge drink

This was somewhat thought-provoking. . .  if you go to a dinner party and have 4-5 or more glasses of wine over at least that number of hours, does that also qualify as binge drinking?  hmmm

College-age adults average 9 alcoholic beverages when they binge drink, CDC report says - The Washington Post:

"College-age drinkers average nine drinks when they get drunk, government health officials said Tuesday. That surprising statistic is part of a new report highlighting the dangers of binge drinking, which usually means four to five drinks at a time. Overall, about 1 in 6 U.S. adults surveyed said they had binged on alcohol at least once in the previous month, though it was more than 1 in 4 for those ages 18 to 34."

Portable Swimming Pools Pose A Danger

Summer started and I'm sweltering.  I work in Pleasanton, CA, and the last two days there have baked as high or near 100 degrees.  ... wishing I had that in-ground or portable swimming pool to cool down.

My mind wanders, as I also have family in New Mexico, and they have an above ground pool with a little one running around.

In the heat of Summer, and in pursuit of watery cool, the danger of portable swimming pool lurks, reports this Pediatrics journal article, Pediatric Submersion Events in Portable - Above-Ground Pools in the United States, 2001–2009.

In a nutshell, the authors conclude that there's a risk:

". . .especially in the under 5-year-old age group. No single strategy will prevent all submersion deaths and injuries; therefore, layers of protection are recommended. Industry is advised to engage in development of protective devices that are effective and affordable for portable pools, including isolation fencing, pool alarms, and safety covers"
Please folks, be thoughtful, wary, and careful this Summer.

Just in case you haven't heard, there's some kind of pertussis (whooping cough) epidemic in California. I live in California, and I take public transportation everyday. Call me phobic, and folks are coughing all around me without covering their mouths. The news about pertussis peaking resonates with me, as I've noticed within my workplace, many folks with peculiar and long-lasting coughs.

Pertussis (Whooping Cough) – What You Need To Know - From the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).  This has some great links to audio files of what whooping cough sounds like.

Are You Safe In An MRI Machine?

The statistics make me nervous. Your personal safety might be at risk, reports this excellent Health Care Blog post, The MRI Safety Gap. If you're headed for an MRI, you'll want to bone-up on the safety risks. It seems that more accidents and harm are happening in the MRI suite. The blog post tells the full story of flying missiles, getting burned, and more. If you're one of approximately 30 million folks (per year) getting an MRI, read the post.
