A new technology offers treatment for HIV infection through a single injection - World Pharma News

According to the article:

"Currently, the researchers explain, there is no genetic treatment for AIDS, so the research opportunities are vast. Dr. Barzel concludes: "We developed an innovative treatment that may defeat the virus with a onetime injection, with the potential of bringing about tremendous improvement in the patients' condition. When the engineered B cells encounter the virus, the virus stimulates and encourages them to divide, so we are utilizing the very cause of the disease to combat it. Furthermore, if the virus changes, the B cells will also change accordingly in order to combat it, so we have created the first medication ever that can evolve in the body and defeat viruses in the 'arms race'.

Based on this study we can expect that over the coming years we will be able to produce in this way a medication for AIDS, for additional infectious diseases and for certain types of cancer caused by a virus, such as cervical cancer, head and neck cancer and more."

CRISPR kills HIV and eats Zika 'like Pac-man'. Its next target? Cancer | WIRED UK

Read the full article:  CRISPR kills HIV and eats Zika 'like Pac-man'. Its next target? Cancer | WIRED UK:

"These new enzymes are variants of a CRISPR protein, Cas13a, which the UC Berkeley researchers reported last September in Nature, and could be used to detect specific sequences of RNA, such as from a virus. The team showed that once CRISPR-Cas13a binds to its target RNA, it begins to indiscriminately cut up all RNA making it "glow" to allow signal detection."

"Taking low-dose aspirin every day may lower the overall risk of cancer by 3 percent, mostly because of larger reductions that were seen in the risk for colon and gastrointestinal tumors, researchers are reporting.

But the benefit was only seen after six years of taking aspirin almost daily, the study authors said."

"Medical experts said that if a family and/or patient considers hospice care preferable to more aggressive hospital treatment, it should be communicated to doctors or caregivers as soon as possible.

"Don't wait for someone to suggest hospice," urges Dr. David Casarett, head of palliative care for Penn Medicine in Philadelphia. "By the time that a doctor thinks about hospice as an option, and suggests it, it's often too late."

A hospice or home hospice care may be better at providing pain or symptom management along with spiritual and emotional support, he says."

You Can Help Cut Acrylamide in Your Diet - FDA

Consumer Updates > You Can Help Cut Acrylamide in Your Diet:

"Cutting down on certain fried foods can also help you cut down on the amount of acrylamide you eat. That's a good thing because high levels of acrylamide have been found to cause cancer in animals, and on that basis scientists believe it is likely to cause cancer in humans as well."

Aspirin May Help Prevent Certain Kinds of Cancer (video)

This is a nice interview and discussion triggered by the latest published findings in the medical journal, Lancet.

The findings strike a chord with me because about 20 years ago, I started taking a baby aspirin every day. Back then there was sparse information available, and I started in hopes of preventing gastrointestinal cancers that my parents succumbed to.

The FDA published this notice. Looks like drug shortages are opening doors for bad actors to take advantage of the situation.

FDA Notifies Health Care Providers about the Risks of Purchasing Unapproved Injectable Cancer Medications from Unlicensed Sources
Current shortages of injectable cancer medications may present an opportunity for unscrupulous individuals to introduce non-FDA approved products into the drug supply, which could result in serious harm to patients. Health care providers are reminded to obtain and use only FDA-approved injectable cancer medications purchased directly from the manufacturer or from wholesale distributors licensed in the United States (U.S.).

"The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a first-of-its-kind device, called MelaFind, that makes detailed, digital images of skin growths and uses a computer to analyze them for signs of cancer, offering a sort of second opinion to doctors. The device is approved only for dermatologists and only for use on growths that don't have obvious signs of cancer but still have one or two worrisome traits."

FDA on Tattoos and Permanent Makeup

Updated November 18, 2024

FDA Webinar on Tattoos and Permanent Makeup (PDF):  'via Blog this'
The FDA hosted a webinar on tattoos and permanent makeup. Bhakti Petigara Harp, Ph.D., of the Office of Cosmetics and Colors, Division of Color Certification and Technology in FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, provided an overview of the composition of tattoo and permanent makeup inks and the pigments used in them, as well as their regulatory status. Dr. Petigara Harp talked about problems that have occurred with the use of these inks, such as allergic reactions, infections, and scarring, and addressed FDA's response to these occurrences. She also discussed misrepresentation of these inks and pigments as "FDA approved."
Background:
FDA considers the inks used in intradermal tattoos, including permanent makeup, to be cosmetics and considers the pigments used in the inks to be color additives requiring premarket approval under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. However, because of other public health priorities and a previous lack of evidence of safety concerns, FDA traditionally has not exercised its regulatory authority over tattoo inks or the pigments used in them. The actual practice of tattooing is regulated by local jurisdictions. In addition, concerns raised by the scientific community regarding the pigments used in these inks have prompted FDA to investigate the safe use of tattoo inks. FDA continues to evaluate the extent and severity of adverse events associated with tattooing and is conducting research on inks. As new information is assessed, the agency will consider whether additional actions are necessary to protect public health.
