America's 'Third Wave' Of Asbestos Disease Upends Lives : Shots - Health News : NPR

"The fire-resistant mineral first had killed asbestos miners, millers and manufacturing workers. Then it had taken out insulators, shipbuilders and others who worked with asbestos products. Eventually, conference attendees agreed, it would be roused from its dormant state in pipes, ceiling tiles and automobile brakes and kill again."

According to Mesothelioma Awareness Day Observed September 26 , "on September 26, 2009 those affected by the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma and volunteers worldwide will help call attention to the rare cancer on national Mesothelioma Awareness Day. The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, the non-profit organization that started the day in 2005, expects the day to be the most successful awareness day for the cancer since it was organized four years ago."

New Technique Might Help Diagnose Mesothelioma

Pleural effusion Chest x-ray of a pleural effu...Image via Wikipedia

This Medical News Today article reports a new technique that might be helpful in diagnosing mesothelioma, New Technique Can Help Diagnose Mesothelioma. A new technique may help clinicians diagnose patients presenting with a pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity) of unknown cause. One of the causes of pleural effusion is malignant pleural mesothelioma, a relatively rare cancer. Currently, the first-line test for mesothelioma in patients with a pleural effusion is pleural fluid cytology, but this test isn't very sensitive. The research study results demonstrate that pleural fluid mesothelin levels were over six times greater in patients with mesothelioma than in patients with metastatic carcinomas, and ten times greater than in patients with benign effusions. This means serum mesothelin is a diagnostic biomarker for mesothelioma. Pleural fluid values are significantly higher than serum levels and may offer additional value over pleural fluid cytology for diagnosis of pleural malignancy. Additionally, pleural fluid mesothelin is a valuable adjunct to cytological examination in patients with an undiagnosed pleural effusion. Hidden Health and Financial Liabilities of Nanotechnology

I found this article somewhat thought provoking, Mesothelioma and the Potential Costs of Nanotechnology. Whatever you believe to be science or risk, about mesothelioma, nanotechnology, or nanotubes, the article raises the possibility of repeating the history of asbestos mesothelioma. More specifically, the highlights for me are:
  • Billions of dollars in potential litigation costs, much like that of asbestos litigation, are hidden from nanotechnology investors due to weak regulations governing disclosures and liabilities
  • Many feel the litigation and health risks surrounding asbestos exposure and malignant mesothelioma cases may be repeated with the widespread use of nanotechnology in consumer products
  • Many companies producing nanotechnology have failed to disclose to investors whether the nanotubes they are making are in the dangerous form (carbon nanotubes) and if there is a potential liability for future side effects of exposure to nanomaterials

I want to be an informed investor and consumer. I need to be able to make my own decisions about my health, and need to know if the products I choose are potentially putting my personal health at risk. 'nuff said.

University Researcher Compares Carbon Nanotubes to Asbestos (video)

I found this YouTube video that helps me visualize how asbestos is physically similar to carbon nanotubes (CNT), Are Carbon Nanotubes the Next Asbestos? (video): Under a microscope, CNTs look identical to asbestos fibers, leading scientists to believe that they could cause similar health problems. In this video, North Carolina State University (NCSU) researcher, Dr. Jamie Bonner, shares his research on the potential toxicity of carbon nanotubes.

CDC Says Mesothelioma Deaths Increasing

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) reports mesothelioma fatalities over the past several years, Malignant Mesothelioma Mortality --- United States, 1999--2005. In a nutshell . . . CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analyzed annual multiple-cause-of-death records for 1999--2005, the most recent years for which complete data are available. For those years, a total of 18,068 deaths of persons with malignant mesothelioma were reported, increasing from 2,482 deaths in 1999 to 2,704 in 2005. The agency expects the number of mesothelioma deaths to peak next year, and to begin to decline, as the improvements in safety and reduction in asbestos use instituted decades ago payoff. The latency period of mesothelioma can be decades long, so even though asbestos is used less widely today, people continue to get mesothelioma due to their exposure in the past. What's concerning is, "Recent studies suggest that carbon nanotubes (fiber-shaped nanoparticles), which are increasingly being used in manufacturing (9), might share the carcinogenic mechanism postulated for asbestos and induce mesothelioma (10), underscoring the need for documentation of occupational history in future cases. Capturing occupational history information for mesothelioma cases is important to identify industries and occupations placing workers at risk for this lethal disease."

Asbestos.com - HONcode Certified

I've been doing a bunch of reading on mesothelioma and asbestos these days. It's hard to find balanced information. I often rely on the HONcode certification 'seal of approval' (principles) to help me discern more trusted sources of information. I mention this because I'm trying to find information sources that I think I can trust, such as Asbestos.com - The leading mesothelioma cancer resource. Do you rely on the HONcode?

I've recently started to read more about mesothelioma and asbestos. I'm finding out that it's very difficult to discern what is really objective and balanced information. Here's a resource that I believe to be credible from a well-respected healthcare provider, Kaiser Permanente, "Mesothelioma." On this page, there's a good list of additional and reputable resources to explore.

What's your experience in finding fair and balanced information? Can you suggest some credible and reputable websites?

Are Nanoparticles Dangerous Like Asbestos?

Speaking of nanoparticles, you might also be interested in:

More recent news buzz on the topic recently. When I see nanotechnology, or nanoparticles, I'm worrying about whether we're creating a wave of manmade asbestos-like materials and ensuing mesothelioma. I stumbled across this on the NIOSH site, and think you'll find it an interesting read. Coming from NIOSH, I'm more likely to believe what I read, "Approaches to Safe Nanotechnology - Managing the Health and Safety Concerns Associated with Engineered Nanomaterials." The document reviews what is currently known about nanoparticle toxicity, process emissions and exposure assessment, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment. This updated version of the document incorporates some of the latest results of NIOSH research, but it is only a starting point. The document serves a dual purpose: it is a summary of NIOSH's current thinking and interim recommendations; and it is a request from NIOSH to occupational safety and health practitioners, researchers, product innovators and manufacturers, employers, workers, interest group members, and the general public to exchange information that will ensure that no worker suffers material impairment of safety or health as nanotechnology develops.
