The FDA Proposes Rules To Ban Menthol In Cigarettes, And More!

According to the FDA news release:

"Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is announcing proposed product standards to prohibit menthol as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes and prohibit all characterizing flavors (other than tobacco) in  cigars. These actions have the potential to significantly reduce disease and death from combusted tobacco product use, the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., by reducing youth experimentation and addiction, and increasing the number of smokers that quit."

Hallucinogen in 'magic mushrooms' helps longtime smokers quit in Hopkins trial | Hub

Read the full article: Hallucinogen in 'magic mushrooms' helps longtime smokers quit in Hopkins trial | Hub:

"Johns Hopkins researchers report that a small number of longtime smokers who had failed many attempts to drop the habit did so after a carefully controlled and monitored use of psilocybin—the active hallucinogenic agent in so-called "magic mushrooms"—in the context of a cognitive behavioral therapy treatment program.

The abstinence rate for study participants was 80 percent after six months, much higher than typical success rates in smoking cessation trials, says Matthew W. Johnson, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and the corresponding author on the study."

World No Tobacco Day is May 31st

If you're a smoker, consider trying to stop smoking on World No Tobacco Day.

On the 31st of May each year, WHO celebrates World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce consumption. Tobacco use is the second cause of death globally (after hypertension) and is currently responsible for killing one in 10 adults worldwide.

The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2010 is "Gender and Tobacco" with an emphasis on marketing to women. The campaign focuses on the damaging effects of tobacco marketing towards women and girls.

The World Health Organization (WHO) urges governments and the public:

  1. to demand a ban on all forms of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship
  2. to support implementation and strong enforcement of legislation to provide 100% protection from tobacco smoke in all public and work places, and
  3. to take global action to advocate for women's freedom from tobacco.

FDA Launches New Tobacco Products Center

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has launched its new FDA Center for Tobacco Products. The Center will oversee the implementation of the Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act signed by President Obama in June 2009. The FDA's responsibilities under the law include setting performance standards, reviewing premarket applications for new and modified risk tobacco products and establishing and enforcing advertising and promotion restrictions.

NPR On FDA Tobacco Oversight (audio)

This audio news story, Talking Tobacco Companies Into FDA Oversight, fresh from NPR:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will have regulatory authority over the $89 billion tobacco industry as soon as President Obama puts his signature to a bill passed by Congress. The change took decades to happen — the industry fought hard to keep the FDA out — but finally succumbed to changing social norms and the guidance from one in its own ranks. Guest host Alison Stewart speaks with Steve Parrish, a former Altria executive and who pushed the company to support FDA regulation of the tobacco industry, and Dr. David Kessler, who was head of the FDA in the mid-1990s.
As a non-smoker, I'm thrilled to see this new day of FDA oversight. As a country we should be paying more attention to improving population health.

Smoking Is Too Expensive - It is time to quit

With an increase in cigarette taxes, it's no surprise many folks are deciding to quit, reports this Washington Post news article, "Cigarette Tax Rises -- And So Does Incentive to Quit." Bottomline, the most important thing a smoker can do is call this national telephone number, 1-800-QUITNOW, that connects callers to smoking cessation programs in all 50 states and D.C., and provides access to counseling and medications. I'm glad to see a surge in quitting, it's good for everybody's health.

Fire Safe Cigarettes Are A Good Thing

I've not heard about fire-safe cigarettes until now, after reading this MSNBC News article, Smokers burned up over ‘fire-safe cigarettes’ - Self-extinguishing smokes sweep the country, but many say they taste bad. As a non-smoker, I think they're a good idea. Living in a parched, drought-stricken location, I see far too many lit cigarettes tossed on the ground, posing a potential fire danger. I can also see the benefit to those choosing to smoke in bed, or prone to falling asleep while smoking. I can see why it'll be hard for remaining states to resist the tide to enact fire-safe cigarette laws. Sugar As Addictive As Cocaine Or Heroin

Recent research suggests this might be true, reports this NY Daily News article, "Sugar as addictive as cocaine, heroin, studies suggest." Princeton University researchers studied bingeing and dependency in rats and found these startling results. Here's just a few of their findings . . .

  • rat brains undergo changes similar to the changes in the brains of people who abuse illegal drugs like cocaine and heroin
  • rats showed behavioral changes, including signs of withdrawal and long-lasting effects that resemble cravings
  • when sugar was taken away, the rats showed signs of withdrawal, like symptoms seen in people when they stop smoking, drinking alcohol, or using drugs

I follow the Atkins diet as an approach to eating (not for active dieting purposes), and I find that my occasional binges of sugar really make me feel differently. Have you experienced anything like what's described above?

FDA Authority Over Tobacco - desperately needed

I was watching this interesting Fox News video, "Tobacco Time," about the effects of smoking on aging. I typically expect to hear how smoking shortens your life. However, this video has a twist, and cites recent National Cancer Institute research, reporting that smoking ages your body 10 years beyond your chronological age.

In any event, while googling for more smoking information, I stumbled across the topic about efforts to put tobacco products under the authority of the FDA. My reading started with this Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids Special Report, "FDA Authority Over Tobacco - Legislation Will Protect Kids and Save Lives." It frames the issue well, and explains the legislative context. This article has been recently updated, reporting successful passage of legislation in the House, "U.S. House Casts Historic Vote to Protect Kids from Tobacco, Save Lives; Senate Should Act This Year and President Should Sign Bill Into Law." It reports, "this legislation would grant the FDA strong and effective authority over the manufacturing, marketing and sale of tobacco products."

Menthol in Cigarettes - Cig makers might've played you! (video)

View the MSNBC video above or read this NY Times article, "Study Finds Manipulation of Menthol Levels." If you smoke, or you've started to, you might be getting manipulated. More specifically, a just published study from Harvard states that cigarette manufacturers might be, "manipulating sensory elements of cigarettes to promote initiation and dependence." If you need help to stop smoking (smoking cessation), here's a good place to start, Smoking and Tobacco Use -How To Quit (on the CDC website).
