Should You Worry About Vision Loss from Viagra? - The People's Pharmacy

According to the article:

"The likelihood of serious vision loss from Viagra is low, but a recent study confirms it is real. Report ANY changes in eyesight promptly!

Drugs for erectile dysfunction have become very popular. They include avanafil (Stendra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra) and the original, sildenafil (Viagra). Such drugs are referred to as phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors, abbreviated PDE5Is. Most men are interested in the benefits of such medications. The risks, on the other hand, get much less attention. A study published in JAMA Ophthalmology, April 7, 2022 reveals an often overlooked complication of PDE5Is: vision loss from Viagra and similar ED drugs."

My gut sense tells me that this is just the tip of the iceberg, a problem of enforcement that the FDA will be hard pressed to wrap their arms around.

FDA Cautions About Sexual Enhancement Supplements

The FDA offers these words of advice to patients, Caution about Sexual Enhancement Supplements.

An FDA investigation of a number of these sexual enhancement products found that a third of them actually contained the same or similar ingredients as those in Viagra (sildenafil citrate), Cialis (tadalafil), and Levitra (vardenafil HCl) - and sometimes in very large amounts. FDA has issued many alerts about these products over the past several years, but their number appears to be growing.

In a nutshell:
  • Patients who should not take approved prescription drugs for erectile dysfunction should not take these sexual enhancement products, because they could pose similar or worse risks.
  • Patients who are using prescription drugs to treat erectile dysfunction should not to take these so-called "supplements" because doing so could expose them to dangerously high doses of the active ingredient in their prescriptions.

Survey says! Men, you need to tell your doctor about your erectile dysfunction (ED)

Cialis product photo from Lilly.com
Men, tell your doctor about your erectile dysfunction (ED). Your ED might be a warning that you might have other potentially serious health conditions. Read this article for in-depth details, "The ED Conversation Dilemma: Forty Percent Of Men With ED Don't Talk To Their Doctor, Survey Finds." It's important for men to discuss ED with a health professional for two reasons. First, to find out if there are other serious medical conditions that require treatment or attention. Second, erectile dysfuntion (ED) can be treated with medications such as Cialis (tadalafil). If you think you're reading about yourself, I recommend you strongly consider sharing your ED with your doctor.

Watermelon Acts Like Viagra?!

Can watermelon help with erectile dysfunction? - Medical News Today

- - -  a portion of the original post follows below  - - -

I just read this news article about watermelon acting like Viagra and wondered how many folks are going to run out this fourth of July weekend to see if watermelon really works like Viagra. I think the timing of this article is somewhat amusing because now people are joking about having a different kind of fireworks over this holiday weekend. I can't wait to see the follow-up threads on what other foods contain the same ingredient in watermelon. Before I close, this takes me back several years, thinking about what used to be taught in pharmacy schools, the coursework of pharmacognosy. Pharmacognosy is the study of natural products (ie, plant, animal, organism, or mineral in nature) used as drugs or for the preparation of drugs. I've often wondered when this class should be added back to the standard pharmacy school curriculum.
