• Ebola is the cause of a viral hemorrhagic fever disease.
• Currently, there are no FDA-approved vaccines or drugs to prevent or treat Ebola.
• Ebola does not pose a significant risk to the U.S. public.

Treatment:
CDC recommends supportive therapy for patients as the primary treatment for Ebola. This includes balancing the patient’s fluids and electrolytes, maintaining their oxygen status and blood pressure and treating them for any complicating infections."

Medical Devices Infected By The Conficker PC Worm

Be very afraid. Hospital and medical devices have been found to be infected by a computer worm (kind of like a virus), reports this Mercury News article, Conficker worm hits hospital devices, "A computer worm that has alarmed security experts around the world has crawled into hundreds of medical devices at dozens of hospitals in the United States and other countries, according to technologists monitoring the threat." What I find so disturbing in the article is, "the working group has seen thousands of other machines located in hospitals reach out to the Conficker mastermind by contacting another computer on the Internet for instructions." The potential danger could be leaking of your health information, or the medical devices could be recruited as robots in an attack on other computer systems. Isn't technology grand!?

HIV AIDS - Gene Research Shows Promise

Jay Levy of UCSF wrote a recent editorial in the NEJM (Levy, NEJM, 2/12/09), as reported in this Medical News Today article, New HIV/AIDS Research Directions Show Promise, NEJM Editorial Says. This is the first time I've read about this, and find it incredibly fascinating and exciting. Here are my takeaways from reading the article . . .

1. Recent HIV/AIDS research that examines the role certain genes play in inhibiting HIV progression shows promise for the development of new treatment measures
2. HIV enters the body through CD4+ T cells and then binds to the chemokine receptors CCR5 and CXCR4.
3. Research has found that people whose cells lack expression of the CCR5 gene typically demonstrate resistance to the virus.
4. Researchers examined the case of an HIV-positive patient with myelogenous leukemia who received a bone marrow transplant from a person whose cells lacked expression of the CCR5 gene. After two transplants, the researchers determined that the patient had no leukemia recurrence and no detectable level of HIV in the bloodstream
5. Levy says, "the result of this study [reported in the same NEJM issue] and others provide further encouragement for those examining approaches to treatment that reduce CCR5 [receptor] expression in persons with HIV." This is the study Levy refers to, Brief Report: Long-Term Control of HIV by CCR5 Delta32/Delta32 Stem-Cell Transplantation (summary).

If you're in the middle of the winter cold bug season, then read this USA Today article, The science of hand washing to ward off cold, flu bugs. We know that hands contaminated with cold or flu viruses can result in catching the bug. Bottomline, you want to wash your hands with soap and water by scrubbing well for at least 20 seconds, and alcohol hand gels are a good second choice. When drying your hands, one advantage of using paper towels, is that you can use the towel to touch a potentially contaminated bathroom door handle when exiting.
