Why Your Future Vaccination Might Not Be A Shot : NPR

Read the full article: Why Your Future Vaccination Might Not Be A Shot : Goats and Soda : NPR:

"Vaccines don't always make it into the people who need them the most. Many require a syringe and a needle to enter the bloodstream and create immunity. And that means a doctor or nurse has to do the job.

But with if a vaccine could be delivered by simply applying a patch? That's Mark Prausnitz's goal: creating a nickel-sized bandage-like device covered with 100 microscopic needles that would puncture the skin, then dissolve to get the vaccine into the body."

"In the face of a growing measles outbreak, President Obama is urging parents to heed modern science and vaccinate their children.

“There is every reason to get vaccinated — there aren’t reasons to not,” Obama said in an interview with NBC News. Excerpts from the interview were aired Sunday night and Monday morning.

“I just want people to know the facts and science and the information,” the president said. “And the fact is that a major success of our civilization is our ability to prevent disease that in the past have devastated folks. And measles is preventable.”"

Company tests a way to deliver vaccines by a skin 'patch' - Boston Business Journal

Read the full article: Company tests a way to deliver vaccines by a skin 'patch' - Boston Business Journal:

"An Australian biotech startup with an office in Cambridge's Kendall Square has developed a way to deliver vaccines to patients without using a syringe or nasal mist. Vaxxas Inc. has developed the Nanopatch, which consists of thousands of vaccine-coated microprojections that penetrate the outer layers of a patient’s skin.

The nano-level sized microprojections are coated with vaccine and then released directly to key immune cells found just below the skin’s surface, according to Vaxxas CEO David Hoey."

CDC: 25 states, including Va., reporting widespread flu | WTVR.com:

"The number of states reporting widespread seasonal flu activity jumped from 10 to 25 last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

Widespread activity was reported in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington state and Wyoming, according to the CDC’s weekly flu advisory report, covering the week ending December 28.

“Widespread” means that more than 50% of geographic regions in a state — counties, for example — are reporting flu activity. It addresses the spread of the flu, not its severity."

Shingles Vaccine for Seniors

Hmmm, my posts are starting to show my age ;)

Shingles Vaccine Works in Older Adults:

"The CDC recommends that all individuals 60 and older receive the shingles vaccine -- which is approved for use in those 50 and older -- although immunosuppression is a contraindication to vaccination. "Given that [immunosupressed] individuals are at greatest risk of both herpes zoster and complications, [the current findings] may have important implications for policy," the researchers wrote."

Just in case you haven't heard, there's some kind of pertussis (whooping cough) epidemic in California. I live in California, and I take public transportation everyday. New HIV Antibodies Hold Promise For Vaccines

The Red ribbon is a symbol for solidarity with...Image via Wikipedia

Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute report promising findings in their research report, Broad and Potent Neutralizing Antibodies from an African Donor Reveal a New HIV-1 Vaccine Target. According to this LA Times news article, Antibodies found that prevent HIV from causing severe AIDS, this means that they have isolated two so-called broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) that can block the action of many strains of HIV, the virus responsible for AIDS. Other bNAbs against HIV have been discovered before, but PG9 and PG16 are the first to be isolated in over 10 years from donors in developing countries, where most new HIV infections occur. Also, the previously identified bNAbs bind to spots on the virus that are hard to target with vaccines. These new antibodies, which are more potent than other antibodies described to date while maintaining great breadth, attach to a novel, and potentially more accessible site on HIV to facilitate vaccine design.

Court Says MMR Vaccine Not A Cause of Autism (video)

A special court's recent ruling that no proven link exists between autism and certain early childhood vaccines seems to have done little to change the sometimes-passionate opinion fueling the debate. The panel of "special masters" ruled that these petitioners had not presented sufficient evidence to prove that the childhood vaccines (specifically the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine containing thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative) caused autism in their children. Learn more about this court ruling in this ABC News Video report, WATCH: Ruling on Autism and Vaccines
