World AIDS Day - Bewildering Number of Official Websites

Today is World AIDS Day. If you Google it, you'll end up finding a dizzying array of websites proclaiming to be the official website for the Day.

Here's my contribution to the conversation. I recommend this helpful US Government site, AIDS.gov.  The opening line on the site just about sums up what they offer, "An estimated 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV, and yet one out of five don’t know it. FDA To Review New Female Condom

Tough situation ahead! There's a new female condom in the pipeline, the FC2, reports this MSNBC article, "New female condom under FDA review - Company didn’t test whether new version prevents pregnancy, STDs." The design is the same as a female condom already on the market. The only difference is what the condom is made of, a new synthetic rubber material called nitrile. The manufacturer says no further studies are needed, and FDA staff are considering whether the company should have conducted specific trials to show how well the FC2 prevents women from contracting diseases or becoming pregnant. Interestingly, the manufacturer's stock price went up today.

5 or More Drinks - Increases STD risk

No surprise. If you drink heavily, your judgement drops, and you're at greater risk of picking up a sexually transmitted disease (STD), reports this LA Times news article, "Binge drinking is fun -- until the gonorrhea diagnosis." Here are the highlights of this article . . .

1. Drinking five or more alcoholic beverages at one time appears to be connected to risky sexual behaviors and higher rates of STDs
2. As far as the actual sex, women are more likely to contract some diseases, such as HIV, through repeated condomless intercourse than are men
