Doctors Cash In on Drug Tests for Seniors, and Medicare Pays the Bill - WSJ - WSJ

Read the full article: Doctors Cash In on Drug Tests for Seniors, and Medicare Pays the Bill - WSJ - WSJ:

"Doctors are testing seniors for drugs such as heroin, cocaine and “angel dust” at soaring rates, and Medicare is paying the bill.

It is a roundabout result of the war on pain-pill addiction.

Medical guidelines encourage doctors who treat pain to test their patients, to make sure they are neither abusing pills nor failing to take them, possibly to sell them.

Now, some pain doctors are making more from testing than from treating."

FDA Warns Of E-Cigarette Risk

Unlit filtered cigarettesImage via Wikipedia

The FDA Warns of Health Risks Posed by E-Cigarettes. Also known as "e-cigarettes," electronic cigarettes are battery-operated devices designed to look like and to be used in the same manner as conventional cigarettes. Sold online and in many shopping malls, the devices generally contain cartridges filled with nicotine, flavor, and other chemicals. They turn nicotine, which is highly addictive, and other chemicals into a vapor that is inhaled by the user. “The FDA is concerned about the safety of these products and how they are marketed to the public,” says Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., commissioner of food and drugs. In the FDA Consumer Update - FDA Warns of Health Risks Posed by E-Cigarettes (pdf), they state that they're concerned about:
  • e-cigarettes can increase nicotine addiction among young people and may lead kids to try other tobacco products, including conventional cigarettes, which are known to cause disease and lead to premature death
  • the products may contain ingredients that are known to be toxic to humans
  • because clinical studies about the safety and efficacy of these products for their intended use have not been submitted to FDA, consumers currently have no way of knowing: 1) whether e-cigarettes are safe for their intended use, or 2) about what types or concentrations of potentially harmful chemicals, or what dose of nicotine they are inhaling when they use these products

For folks in the regulated industries, you'll be interested to know that the FDA has been examining and detaining shipments of e-cigarettes at the border and the products it has examined thus far meet the definition of a combination drug-device product under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Sugar As Addictive As Cocaine Or Heroin

Recent research suggests this might be true, reports this NY Daily News article, "Sugar as addictive as cocaine, heroin, studies suggest." Princeton University researchers studied bingeing and dependency in rats and found these startling results. Here's just a few of their findings . . .

  • rat brains undergo changes similar to the changes in the brains of people who abuse illegal drugs like cocaine and heroin
  • rats showed behavioral changes, including signs of withdrawal and long-lasting effects that resemble cravings
  • when sugar was taken away, the rats showed signs of withdrawal, like symptoms seen in people when they stop smoking, drinking alcohol, or using drugs

I follow the Atkins diet as an approach to eating (not for active dieting purposes), and I find that my occasional binges of sugar really make me feel differently. Have you experienced anything like what's described above?

It turns out that the internet is a great teacher and source for obtaining prescription drugs without a prescription. I find this a very provocative video. What do you think?

Menthol in Cigarettes - Cig makers might've played you! (video)

View the MSNBC video above or read this NY Times article, "Study Finds Manipulation of Menthol Levels." If you smoke, or you've started to, you might be getting manipulated. More specifically, a just published study from Harvard states that cigarette manufacturers might be, "manipulating sensory elements of cigarettes to promote initiation and dependence." If you need help to stop smoking (smoking cessation), here's a good place to start, Smoking and Tobacco Use -How To Quit (on the CDC website).
