Contact Lens Solutions With Hydrogen Peroxide: To Avoid Injury, Follow All Instructions - FDA

Read the full article: Consumer Updates > Contact Lens Solutions With Hydrogen Peroxide: To Avoid Injury, Follow All Instructions - FDA:

"Before you use solution with hydrogen peroxide, read all warning labels and instructions. Also note that the tip of the bottle is red. The red coloring is a reminder that these products require special handling.

“You should never put hydrogen peroxide directly into your eyes or on your contact lenses,” Lepri says. That’s because this kind of solution can cause stinging, burning, and damage—specifically to your cornea (the clear surface that covers your eye).

If you use a solution that has hydrogen peroxide you absolutely must follow the disinfecting process with a “neutralizer.” A neutralizer is always sold as part of your hydrogen peroxide cleaning solution kit. It turns the peroxide into water and oxygen, making it safe to put lenses into your eyes."

Fireworks Safety & Injuries - Be Safe!

Take caution with fireworks!

Fireworks injuries sent more than 5,000 people to U.S. emergency departments in the 30 days surrounding the Fourth of July last year, with firecrackers, aerial explosives and homemade devices causing most of the harm, consumer safety experts said. About 60 percent of the estimated 8,700 people treated for injuries in 2012 were hurt between June 22 and July 22, according to new figures from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Portable Swimming Pools Pose A Danger

Summer started and I'm sweltering.  I work in Pleasanton, CA, and the last two days there have baked as high or near 100 degrees.  ... wishing I had that in-ground or portable swimming pool to cool down.

My mind wanders, as I also have family in New Mexico, and they have an above ground pool with a little one running around.

In the heat of Summer, and in pursuit of watery cool, the danger of portable swimming pool lurks, reports this Pediatrics journal article, Pediatric Submersion Events in Portable - Above-Ground Pools in the United States, 2001–2009.

In a nutshell, the authors conclude that there's a risk:

". . .especially in the under 5-year-old age group. No single strategy will prevent all submersion deaths and injuries; therefore, layers of protection are recommended. Industry is advised to engage in development of protective devices that are effective and affordable for portable pools, including isolation fencing, pool alarms, and safety covers"
Please folks, be thoughtful, wary, and careful this Summer.

7. Bone gets stuck in intestines and causes a blockage.
8. Constipation due to bone fragments.
9. Severe bleeding from the rectum.

Wow - FDA OKs Stem Cell Trial - This is a red letter day!

I'm thrilled to see some momentum gaining in this potentially rich area of clinical research. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted clearance for Geron Corp. to begin trials for the world's first study of a human embryonic stem cell-based therapy for people. Geron said it will begin a Phase I multicenter trial designed to establish the safety of its treatment, currently referred to as "GRNOPC1," in patients with complete Grade A subacute thoracic spinal cord injuries. Read more details in this Medical News Today article, US Approves First Trial Of Embryonic Stem Cells.

I'm of the opinion that stem cell research has been stifled for way too long, and it's good to see the appearance of these studies. What's your opinion?
