Bad Pharma - Book Review

No doubt this will be a provocative read.  Follow the link to a comprehensive review of the book.

Science-Based Medicine » Bad Pharma: A Manifesto to Fix the Pharmaceutical Industry:

"Closing thoughts
This is a book with important messages for patients, health care professionals, governments, and the pharmaceutical industry. It may anger, and even infuriate you. It should. Yet Goldacre sketches out a path for reform – one in which transparency is the rule, not the exception, and one in which the pharmaceutical industry can engage with the health care system in ways that will help it do what we all want it to do – bring innovative new medications to market that improve the health and welfare of patients. This change, however, will only come when we demand better – better from pharmaceutical companies, better from regulators, and better from our fellow health professionals. Ultimately, we’ll have the industry we deserve – if we’re not willing to demand better, we’re never going to see any improvements. This book is your call to action."

I love this article I read on CNN.com, America's healthiest pleasures: 10 'vices' that are good for you. This means I get to do a bunch of things without feeling guilty, and get a health benefit too!

I especially like indulging in coffee, chocolate, wine, sleep.... hmm, I think I like almost all ten!

Fire Safe Cigarettes Are A Good Thing

I've not heard about fire-safe cigarettes until now, after reading this MSNBC News article, Smokers burned up over ‘fire-safe cigarettes’ - Self-extinguishing smokes sweep the country, but many say they taste bad. As a non-smoker, I think they're a good idea. Living in a parched, drought-stricken location, I see far too many lit cigarettes tossed on the ground, posing a potential fire danger. I can also see the benefit to those choosing to smoke in bed, or prone to falling asleep while smoking. I can see why it'll be hard for remaining states to resist the tide to enact fire-safe cigarette laws. Choosing A Mouthrinse For Bad Breath

Nobody wants bad breath. Nobody wants to endure somebody else's bad breath. This Medical News Today article, "Combatting Bad Breath: Mouthrinses Work, But Some Cause Temporary Staining" gives some advice and cautions in choosing products to buy. Here are the takeaways . . .

  1. Over the counter mouthrinses actually work
  2. Mouthrinses containing chlorhexidine can cause temporary staining of the tongue and teeth, and also can temporarily alter taste sensations
  3. Chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium were significantly more effective than placebos in reducing mouth odors
  4. Chlorine dioxide and zinc were more effective in neutralising odor compounds

Bad Economy Improves Public Health!?

Yeah, it's counterintuitive, as reported in this LA Times news article, "Can a troubled economy actually improve public health? " It's an interesting thought, a poor economy might actually help all of us cut down on risky behaviors, and lead to a potentially healthier population.

I would've imagined that a recession would make us all go out, get stressed, smoke more, and drink harder, etc. But to my surprise, here's what seems to really happen . . .

  1. Traffic accidents go down when fewer people are working
  2. People drink less. That is to say, people who already drink, do less of it.
  3. Healthful living improves.
