Read the full post:  World Health Day 2015: A Global Focus on Food Safety | FDA Voice:

"Food safety is a public health issue that affects all nations – from the most advanced to the most poor. World Health Day, observed on April 7 each year to mark the anniversary of the 1948 founding of the World Health Organization (WHO), gives us an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made to address the need for strong food safety systems, and on the enormous challenges that lie ahead.

The global importance of this issue is reflected in this year’s World Health Day theme: “Food Safety: From Farm to Plate, Keep it Safe.”  Keeping food safe, from farm to table, is at the core of our mission as an agency and at the heart of the preventive, risk-focused food safety system envisioned by the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)."

UN World Drug Report 2013 - Alarming rise in NPS

The acronym NPS stands for new psychoactive substances.

World Drug Report: stability in use of traditional drugs, alarming rise in new psychoactive substances:

"This is an alarming drug problem - but the drugs are legal. Sold openly, including via the internet, NPS, which have not been tested for safety, can be far more dangerous than traditional drugs. Street names, such as "spice", "meow-meow" and "bath salts" mislead young people into believing that they are indulging in low-risk fun. Given the almost infinite scope to alter the chemical structure of NPS, new formulations are outpacing efforts to impose international control. While law enforcement lags behind, criminals have been quick to tap into this lucrative market. The adverse effects and addictive potential of most of these uncontrolled substances are at best poorly understood."

World No Tobacco Day is May 31st

If you're a smoker, consider trying to stop smoking on World No Tobacco Day.

On the 31st of May each year, WHO celebrates World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce consumption. Tobacco use is the second cause of death globally (after hypertension) and is currently responsible for killing one in 10 adults worldwide.

The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2010 is "Gender and Tobacco" with an emphasis on marketing to women. The campaign focuses on the damaging effects of tobacco marketing towards women and girls.

The World Health Organization (WHO) urges governments and the public:

  1. to demand a ban on all forms of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship
  2. to support implementation and strong enforcement of legislation to provide 100% protection from tobacco smoke in all public and work places, and
  3. to take global action to advocate for women's freedom from tobacco.

Counterfeits In The Global Drug Supply

More bad news about fake drugs getting into the global drug supply.  This Chemical and Engineering News article is very well written, Fake Pharmaceuticals - Those fighting against counterfeit medicines face increasingly sophisticated adversaries.

Here are my takeaways:
  • "The best “guesstimate” is that 1% of drugs in the developed world are counterfeit. In developing nations, between 10 and 50% of drugs are thought to be fake."
  • "Is it possible to stop medicines counterfeiting altogether? I doubt very much whether it is. All we can do is to try our best to secure the supply chain."

We're still reeling from the tainted heparin situation, and I suspect that it's only the tip of the iceberg. A rising percentage of drugs are coming from China and India, reports this ASHP News article, "World's Drug Supply Chain Needs Better Oversight, FDA Says." The associate commissioner for policy and planning at FDA is quoted, and here's a small sample of highlights . . .
  • "where there are economic incentives and/or there is lax regulatory oversight, there is going to be greater opportunity for risky or criminal behavior"
  • "If we have good behavior, we want to facilitate compliance. If we have risky behavior, we want to provide deterrence. And with criminal behavior, we need rapid detection and aggressive enforcement. And electronic track and trace can play an important role in it."

Testing Approved Drugs In The Real World With Real People

Updated November 25, 2022

In the drug development process, drugs are clinically tested in very select patient populations. This means that once a drug gets approved, the drug is often given to quite a different kind of patient population, and the results of drug treatment could be different. For the big picture, read this compelling Star News Online article, "New Arena for Testing of Drugs: Real World." I find the story so compelling for the following reasons . . .
  1. Patients, health care professionals, and the pharmaceutical industry bring their own unique health and business issues or needs to the table
  2. It's ultimately about the patient, and there's a need to know whether approved drugs help or harm in the real world

Pause And Reflect On World AIDS Day (Dec 1)

The fight is far from over. HIV continues to threaten the health of many communities in the United States. CDC data indicate that more than 1.1 million Americans live with HIV, and that an estimated 56,000 new infections occur in the United States every year. Some populations are harder hit than others. For example, it particularly affects gay and bisexual men, and affects African-Americans and Hispanics more than whites. Take a few moments to pause, reflect, and share the following resources widely.

Learn more at the:
  • CDC HIV/AIDS website - advice, information, fact sheets, brochures, slides, podcasts, reports, resources, and more
  • AIDS.gov website - Information from the Federal government about HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, treatment, research, and using new media in response to HIV/AIDS - FAQs, podcasts, RSS feeds, blogs, and more
