The Supreme Court just limited federal power. Health care is feeling shockwaves - Health News Florida

According to the article:

"The ruling will likely have seismic ramifications for health policy.

A flood of litigation — with plaintiffs like small businesses, drugmakers, and hospitals challenging regulations they say aren’t specified in the law — could leave the country with a patchwork of disparate health regulations varying by location."

"Health policy leaders say patients, providers and health systems should brace for more uncertainty and less stability in the health care system. Even routine government functions such as deciding the rate to pay doctors for treating Medicare beneficiaries could become embroiled in long legal battles that disrupt patient care or strain providers to adapt."

Healthcare organizations under siege from cyberattacks, study says - latimes.com

Healthcare organizations under siege from cyberattacks, study says - latimes.com:

"The study was conducted by Norse, a Silicon Valley cybersecurity firm, and SANS, a security research institute. In the report, the groups found from September 2012 to October 2013 that 375 healthcare organizations in the U.S. had been compromised, and in many cases are still compromised because they have not yet detected the attacks.  In addition to getting access to patient files and information, the attackers managed to infiltrate devices such as radiology imaging software, conferencing systems, printers, firewalls, Web cameras and mail servers."

Cramer - Top 4 Healthcare Predictions for 2010

Economic Map of the World: Emerging Markets an...Image via Wikipedia

... rather, that's Cliff Cramer. In looking for 2010 trends, and predictions, I stumbled across his predictions, Top 4 Healthcare Predictions for 2010. It's the start of an interesting and provocative discussion of his 4 predictions (which I've truncated):
  1. Multi-national pharmaceutical and medical technology companies will increase their investments in emerging markets.
  2. Information technology will make greater strides in a healthcare industry.
  3. Healthcare reform will continue across developed and developing markets.
  4. Consolidation will be a major theme in 2010.

I recommend you go to his post, and jump into the discussion. On some gut level, I'm hoping the predictions ring true as my retirement investments will benefit.

Kevin O'Donnell reminds us that the new version of IATA's Perishable Cargo Regulations (PCR) take effect on July 1, 2009, in one of his recent Where Cooler Heads Prevails Blog (http://www.coolerheadsblog.com/) posts, Links to IATA's New Regulations for Time and Temperature-Sensitive Healthcare Products.

In one of his earlier posts, New IATA Regulations Take Effect July 1st, 2009, he writes, "The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will release the 9th Edition of the Perishable Cargo Regulations in June, with the content effective July 1st, 2009. Commonly referred to as Chapter 17, (Air Transport Logistics for Time- and Temperature-Sensitive Healthcare Products), it has undergone considerable revision and represents the airline's pro-active effort to improve handling processes for high-value, high-volume healthcare cargo, including requirements for implementation of a new handling label."

In a nutshell, the 9th edition of the PCR introduces new requirements for the transportation logistics of healthcare products. Amongst these are a new quality management system, training requirements and a new label (mandatory as of July 2010). These changes are the result of the collaboration by carriers with pharmaceutical associations and many other stakeholders in the supply chain, all within a major revision to Chapter 17.

Shocking - Health Care Costs (multimedia)

Uggggh! Take a gander at these visuals about health care costs. Nothing pretty going on here. The statistics are presented by MSNBC, "Health Care & Costs, By The Numbers." Here's what they show . . .
  1. Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured (24.5%)
  2. Over 33% of the U.S. poor, and nearly 30% of the 'near poor' lack health coverage
  3. In the last decade, more people delay or don't pursue medical treatment due to the lack of coverage, and rising cost of medical coverage
  4. In 2004, the U.S. spent $6,102 per person on health care
  5. 46.2% of those filing for bankruptcy in 2001 cited medical causes

It seems to me that our health care system is broken, and we need to find a way to reform the healthcare system.
