"The hackers gained access to Anthem's computer system and got information including names, birthdays, medical IDs, Social Security numbers, street addresses, e-mail addresses and employment information, including income data, Swedish said.

The affected database had records for approximately 80 million people in it, "but we are still investigating to determine how many were impacted. At this point we believe it was tens of millions," said Cindy Wakefield, an Anthem spokeswoman.

That would make it "the largest health care breach to date," said Vitor De Souza, a spokesman for Mandiant, the computer security company Anthem has hired to evaluate its systems."

"Medtronic reported in regulatory filings today that it and 2 other unnamed "large medical device manufacturers" were targeted by hackers appearing to originate from Asia. Those infiltrators didn't breach any patient data, Medtronic assured regulators.

Medtronic offered few other details regarding the hack, but the disclosure seems to fall in line with an reports earlier this year that Chinese hackers targeted systems at Medtronic, Boston Scientific (NYSE:BSX) and St. Jude Medical (NYSE:STJ)."

"Hackers have penetrated the computer networks of the country's top medical device makers, The Chronicle has learned.

The attacks struck Medtronic, the world's largest medical device maker, Boston Scientific and St. Jude Medical sometime during the first half of 2013 and might have lasted as long as several months, according to a source close to the companies.

It's not clear what exactly the hackers were after, but federal laws meant to safeguard medical information require the companies to disclose any breach involving patient information. The companies have made no such disclosures."
