Yes, Mark Cuban did start a real online drugstore - ABC10

Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company is a real wholesale drug distributor that works with an accredited pharmacy.

According to the article:

"Mark Cuban’s online drugstore, Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company, is a legitimate online store to buy medication. It’s registered as a “wholesale drug distributor” instead of a “pharmacy” because Mark Cuban’s store does not fill prescriptions itself — it works with a partner pharmacy to dispense medication."

"TruePill, Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company’s pharmaceutical partner, is an accredited digital pharmacy with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) and its accreditation was confirmed through email by an NABP spokesperson."

Millions of Americans receive drugs by mail. But are they safe? - NBC News

 According to the article:

"Millions of Americans receive their medications by mail but many, like Becker, find themselves forced to do so by their insurance plans or face the prospect of paying exorbitant amounts for the same drugs.

An NBC News investigation found the growth of mail-order pharmacies has caused many people to feel trapped in a system that has left them with crushed pills, damaged vials and lifesaving drugs exposed to extreme weather.  ...

Interviews with more than 65 mail-order pharmacy customers across the nation revealed deep worries over how their medication is delivered — and no affordable alternatives. Many reported receiving drugs in flimsy packaging without temperature indicators, which can cost as little as a dollar per package. Others have had to plead with pharmacies to send them replacement drugs after receiving medication they thought arrived too warm or cold."

The Arizona site now has active pharmacy licenses across 19 states with three applications pending. This is in addition to the company’s mail-order facilities in Manchester, New Hampshire (which has licenses in 49 states), Miami, Florida (which has licenses in 45 states) and Austin, Texas (which has licenses in 43 states). Read all the six ways:  Six Ways Amazon Could Invade the Pharmacy Business - Bloomberg:

"Amazon already owns wholesale distribution licenses in at least 13 states and could build its own pharmacy business from scratch, restructuring the drug supply chain in the process. Press Announcements > FDA targets illegal online pharmacies in globally coordinated action - FDA:

"The FDA and the CBP inspected packages at the mail facilities in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, and detained or seized 583 packages. Preliminary findings show that certain drug products from abroad, such as insulin, estrogen, bimatoprost, human chorionic gonadotropin, tramadol, tadalafil and sildenafil citrate were on their way to U.S. consumers. The FDA also notified Internet service providers, domain name registrars and related organizations that 1,975 websites were selling products in violation of U.S. law."

Internet Pharmacies: Most Rogue Sites Operate from Abroad, and Many Sell Counterfeit Drugs - U.S. GAO

U.S. GAO - Internet Pharmacies: Most Rogue Sites Operate from Abroad, and Many Sell Counterfeit Drugs:

"Although the exact number of rogue Internet pharmacies is unknown, one estimate suggests that there were over 36,000 in operation as of February 2014, and these rogue sites violate a variety of federal laws. Most operate from abroad, and many illegally ship prescription drugs into the United States that have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), including drugs that are counterfeit or are otherwise substandard. Many also illegally sell prescription drugs without a prescription that meets federal and state requirements. Foreign rogue Internet pharmacies use sophisticated methods to evade scrutiny by customs officials and smuggle drugs into the country. Their operators also often violate other laws, including those related to fraud and money laundering."

Avoid Retail Clinics for Pediatric Care, AAP Says - Medscape

Avoid Retail Clinics for Pediatric Care, AAP Says: (Medscape):

"Although in-store medical clinics have been proliferating since they first appeared in 2000, most medical societies and many physicians think they are a bad idea.

Firmly in that camp is the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which renewed its opposition to retail-based clinics (RBCs) in a policy statement published online February 24 in Pediatrics.

The growth of RBCs has been significant, with such clinics numbering 6000 as of 2012, according to the AAP statement. In previous surveys, about 15% of respondents anticipated that in the future they would likely be using in-store clinics for at least part of their children's medical care. (Most people treated at in-store clinics are adults.)"

Find Open Pharmacies In Disaster Areas - About Rx Open

I just learned about Rx Open. It's a very cleverly designed tool to help people find pharmacies that are open. Now that I live in a hurricane prone part of the country, these kind of tools are catching my eye.

About Rx Open:

"... enables patients to be able to locate nearby open pharmacies in a disaster impacted area, Rx Response created Rx Open (formerly called the Pharmacy Status Reporting Tool).

This powerful online tool maps the location of open pharmacies using Google Maps, and also shows which pharmacies are closed and those whose status is unknown. This tool not only helps citizens locate open pharmacies following a major emergency,"

FDA Asking for More Control Over Drug Compounding

F.D.A. Asking for More Control Over Drug Compounding - NYTimes.com:

"Among the changes proposed by Dr. Hamburg are requiring larger compounders to register with the F.D.A. and abide by its so-called good manufacturing practice [GMP], which requires drug producers to report any problems with their products to the agency. She is also recommending new labeling requirements that would make the origin and the risks of a compounded drug clear. She is also requesting that some products, including drugs with complex dosage forms, be banned for compounders.

“In light of growing evidence of threats to the public health, the administration urges Congress to strengthen federal standards for nontraditional compounding,” Dr. Hamburg stated in the written testimony. “Such legislation should appropriately balance legitimate compounding that meets a genuine medical need with the reality that compounded drugs pose greater risks than those that are evaluated by F.D.A.”"

Compounding pharmacies need FDA oversight

Will Congress step in, to help the FDA?

Compounding pharmacies need FDA oversight - The Washington Post:

. . . Congress gave the FDA some oversight power in 1997 over compounding pharmacies, but several of the firms challenged the law in court. At issue was the FDA’s power to regulate their brochures and advertising. In 2002, the Supreme Court ruled for the pharmacies. Two appellate court decisions since then conflict about whether the original law is valid and enforceable. Congress has failed to clarify the situation. . .

"The federal government, Congress and the states all bear some blame for this lapse of oversight. There are proven methods to prevent contaminated medicine from reaching patients — methods that were simply not used in this case. Congress can remedy the situation by putting the regulation of large-scale drug compounding unequivocally under FDA control. The health and safety of Americans demand that government not fail a second time."

Just Throw Them Out - referring to drugs

Just Throw Them Out | The Scientist:

"The researchers compared three possible disposal methods: flushing the drugs, returning them to a pharmacy for incineration, or throwing them away. While incineration rendered the drugs completely inactive, the annual cost of a national drug take-back program could be as high as $2 billion. Flushing the drugs down the toilet would result in the highest environmental exposure to the chemicals. On the other hand, prior research had suggested that leaching from a landfill was not a significant source of pollution. Therefore, trash disposal is the simplest and most economical strategy."

FDA's Stance On Online Pharmacies May Go Too Far, Study Says : Shots - Health Blog : NPR

FDA's Stance On Online Pharmacies May Go Too Far, Study Says : Shots - Health Blog : NPR:

"The Food and Drug Administration has warned people about the many dangers of buying medications from foreign pharmacies over the Internet. While some sites might offer high-quality medicines, there are plenty that sell bogus and potentially dangerous products.

But a recent economic analysis suggests that while there's good reason for the safety warnings, the FDA's stance on the matter might go too far. Many Americans don't fill their prescriptions because they can't afford to, the study says, and some legitimate foreign pharmacies may offer medicines at prices lower than those of verified U.S. suppliers."

. . . "In light of this," the researchers asked, "we wonder whether a blanket warning against foreign websites has limited price competition between U.S. and foreign websites, and whether a more open and educational policy could make better use of the existing verification services for consumer savings in authentic drugs."
