"The draft plan lays out the NNI’s goals and objectives, which remain largely unchanged from 2011 (see here). As with the 2011 Plan, the draft 2014 Plan includes a description of FDA’s NNI-related activities. Those activities continue to be primarily focused on the goal of supporting responsible development of nanotechnology. However, the 2014 Plan more explicitly recognizes the potential impact of nanotechnology on the status of FDA-regulated products:" . . .

3D-Printed Medical Devices Spark FDA Evaluation | LiveScience:

"The FDA currently treats 3D-printed devices the same way it treats conventionally made medical devices, an FDA spokeswoman said.

"We evaluate all devices, including any that utilize 3D printing technology, for safety and effectiveness, and appropriate benefit and risk determination, regardless of the manufacturing technologies used," spokeswoman Susan Laine told LiveScience in an email. She added, "In some cases, we may require manufacturers to provide us with additional data, based on the complexity of the device." "

  1. Alarm hazards
  2. Medication administration errors using infusion pumps
  3. Unnecessary exposures and radiation burns from diagnostic radiology procedures
  4. Patient/data mismatches in EHRs and other health IT systems
  5. Interoperability failures with medical devices and health IT systems
  6. Air embolism hazards
  7. Inattention to the needs of pediatric patients when using “adult” technologies
  8. Inadequate reprocessing of endoscopic devices and surgical instruments

The New iPill - Intelligent pill for drug development

Healthcare IT News reports, "Philips iPill targets treatment for digestive tract diseases" This is a pretty interesting little drug delivery device, fill it up with medication, and it can be programmed to release it as it travels along.

Philips is also known for its FDA-approved "first camera pill" of 2001 used "for diagnostic applications." This new drug delivery device is intelligent pill technology named the 'iPill,' and is designed to aid drug development focusing on new therapies for gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, such as colon cancer. Here are some facts about the iPill . . .

  1. The iPill is swallowed and passes through the GI tract naturally
  2. It can be programmed to release medicine
  3. It measures the local acidity along the GI tract and can report its current location
  4. It also reports local temperatures, and does so wirelessly
