FDA - Consumer Updates > Food Safety Tips for Healthy Holidays
"Combating bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other contaminants in our food supply is a high priority for the Food and Drug Administration. But consumers have a role to play, too, especially when it comes to safe food-handling practices in the home.
"The good news is that practicing four basic food safety measures can help prevent foodborne illness," says Marjorie Davidson, a consumer educator at FDA."

Buy, Store & Serve Safe Food > Eating Outdoors, Handling Food Safely - FDA.gov
"Picnic and barbecue season offers lots of opportunities for outdoor fun with family and friends. But these warm weather events also present opportunities for foodborne bacteria to thrive. As food heats up in summer temperatures, bacteria multiply rapidly.
To protect yourself, your family, and friends from foodborne illness during warm-weather months, safe food handling when eating outdoors is critical. Read on for simple food safety guidelines for transporting your food to the picnic site, and preparing and serving it safely once you've arrived."

Getting it Right on Spent Grains | FDA Voice
"We've heard from trade groups and members of Congress, as well as individual breweries raising concerns that FDA might disrupt or even eliminate this practice by making brewers, distillers, and food manufacturers comply not only with human food safety requirements but also additional, redundant animal feed standards that would impose costs without adding value for food or feed safety.
That, of course, would not make common sense, and we're not going to do it.
In fact, we agree with those in industry and the sustainability community that the recycling of human food by-products to animal feed contributes substantially to the efficiency and sustainability of our food system and is thus a good thing. We have no intention to discourage or disrupt it."

FDA rethinking food inspections
I wonder what Upton Sinclair would say about the state of current affairs.
FDA rethinking food inspections - DailyHerald.com:
"The surge in imports has also increased the chances of contamination in foods regulated by the FDA. About 80 percent of seafood, 50 percent of fresh fruits and 20 percent of fresh vegetables are imported.
Despite the mounting threats, the FDA and its contractors inspected only 6 percent of the 421,000 domestic and foreign facilities under its watch in 2010, according to the most recent figures. Inspections account for the full-time work of just 1,000 employees. But if a site is linked to an outbreak of illness, inspectors and FDA scientists descend on it, sometimes staying put for weeks.
Under the food-safety bill enacted last year, food companies must adopt plans to spot and prevent hazards. The law also mandates more frequent inspections. For instance, plants that produce or process high-risk foods, including foods connected to previous outbreaks, must be inspected by 2015 and every three years thereafter."

FDA ramps up role as safety sheriff - Omaha.com:
"The federal Food Safety Modernization Act will result in numerous changes — some large, some small — for food manufacturers and farmers in 2012 and beyond as the Food and Drug Administration continues its slow, steady rollout of new regulations. During the new law's first year, little has changed other than sweeping educational efforts to prepare farmers and food manufacturers for ramped-up federal inspection efforts. The inspections will include more, and increasingly intense, reviews of food safety and health protocols. But for 2012 and beyond, companies are preparing for financial effects. Over the next five years, the FDA is planning to issue more than 50 new rules, add inspectors and ramp up oversight efforts to the tune of $1.4 billion."'via Blog this'

FDA Consumer Updates - Food Safety Tips for Healthy Holidays
Typical symptoms of foodborne illness are vomiting, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms, which can start anywhere from hours to days after contaminated food or drinks are consumed.
The symptoms usually are not long-lasting in healthy people—a few hours or a few days—and usually go away without medical treatment. But foodborne illness can be severe and even life-threatening to anyone, especially those most at risk:
- older adults
- infants and young children
- pregnant women
- people with HIV/AIDS, cancer, or any condition that weakens their immune system
- people who take medicines that suppress the immune system; for example, some medicines for rheumatoid arthritis

FDA Targets Tainted Dietary Supplements
The FDA intends to:
- Send a letter to the dietary supplement industry, stressing its legal obligation to prevent tainted products from reaching the market, and emphasizing the possibility of criminal investigations against those who endanger public health by their involvement in tainted products.
- Implement a new, rapid notification system for the public on the FDA web site to alert the public quickly to tainted products marketed as dietary supplements.
- Put in place a mechanism for industry to alert the FDA about the tainted products and the firms involved.
