Pick the wrong Medicare drug plan and the cost will shock you - CNBC

Read the full article:   Pick the wrong Medicare drug plan and the cost will shock you - CNBC:

"As prescription drug prices continue their upward climb, Medicare beneficiaries should pay close attention to the coverage they choose during open enrollment." ...  "Either way, experts say that while you should ensure that any medications you take are covered, don't stop your search at the first choice meeting that basic minimum."

Learn more: Talk to your doctor about health costs. It can save you money. - KevinMD.com:

"For starters: They can talk to their doctors about these costs. According to a study my colleagues and I just published, when health care costs come up for discussion during clinical appointments, doctors and patients increasingly discuss strategies for how to lower out-of-pocket expenditures."

Hidden Health and Financial Liabilities of Nanotechnology

I found this article somewhat thought provoking, Mesothelioma and the Potential Costs of Nanotechnology. Whatever you believe to be science or risk, about mesothelioma, nanotechnology, or nanotubes, the article raises the possibility of repeating the history of asbestos mesothelioma. More specifically, the highlights for me are:
  • Billions of dollars in potential litigation costs, much like that of asbestos litigation, are hidden from nanotechnology investors due to weak regulations governing disclosures and liabilities
  • Many feel the litigation and health risks surrounding asbestos exposure and malignant mesothelioma cases may be repeated with the widespread use of nanotechnology in consumer products
  • Many companies producing nanotechnology have failed to disclose to investors whether the nanotubes they are making are in the dangerous form (carbon nanotubes) and if there is a potential liability for future side effects of exposure to nanomaterials

I want to be an informed investor and consumer. I need to be able to make my own decisions about my health, and need to know if the products I choose are potentially putting my personal health at risk. 'nuff said.

I ran across an eSearch article about saving money on drugs. The article references a book just about cost-saving methods, "How to Save on Prescription Drugs: 20 Cost-saving Methods." You can never get enough of these kind of tips. In a nutshell, here are the broad strokes to cut down on costs . . .

  1. Eliminate non-essential prescriptions (e.g., ones that no longer work)
  2. Think outside the prescription bottle (e.g., make lifestyle changes)
  3. Steer clear of overpriced redundant drugs (e.g., take generic drugs)
  4. Play it smart (e.g., comparison shop)

Uggggh! Take a gander at these visuals about health care costs. Nothing pretty going on here. The statistics are presented by MSNBC, "Health Care & Costs, By The Numbers." Here's what they show . . .
  1. Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured (24.5%)
  2. Over 33% of the U.S. poor, and nearly 30% of the 'near poor' lack health coverage
  3. In the last decade, more people delay or don't pursue medical treatment due to the lack of coverage, and rising cost of medical coverage
  4. In 2004, the U.S. spent $6,102 per person on health care
  5. 46.2% of those filing for bankruptcy in 2001 cited medical causes

It seems to me that our health care system is broken, and we need to find a way to reform the healthcare system.
