CMS Unveils More User-Friendly Medicare Website - CMS.gov

 According to the press release:

"New Medicare.gov will incorporate public feedback and make it easier to compare, choose, and understand Medicare coverage.

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) unveiled several updates to the Medicare.gov website that make it easier, for millions of people who use it, to navigate and access information to compare and select health and drug coverage and find providers. The updated website, based on consumer feedback, prominently features timely initiatives and messages on the homepage and highlights key tasks and information most frequently sought by people with Medicare, people nearing Medicare eligibility, and their families."

Uggggh! Take a gander at these visuals about health care costs. Nothing pretty going on here. The statistics are presented by MSNBC, "Health Care & Costs, By The Numbers." Here's what they show . . .

1. Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured (24.5%)
2. Over 33% of the U.S. poor, and nearly 30% of the 'near poor' lack health coverage
3. In the last decade, more people delay or don't pursue medical treatment due to the lack of coverage, and rising cost of medical coverage
4. In 2004, the U.S. spent $6,102 per person on health care
5. 46.2% of those filing for bankruptcy in 2001 cited medical causes

It seems to me that our health care system is broken, and we need to find a way to reform the healthcare system.

It Is Not OK To Abusively Cancel Health Insurance

Are you 1 of about 14 million Americans that have an 'individual policy' that could be potentially affected by this? Read the full LA Times article, "California fines two health plans $13 million."

In California, some folks carrying individual health insurance coverage had their policies terminated by health insurers after they became ill. As a result, some people landed in situations where they lost their homes and businesses. California state authorities are watching for abusive practices and have stepped in over time to smooth things over. The good thing is now everyone is watching. Health insurers will need to be more careful, and people with coverage who become sick have hope that their coverage won't be unfairly canceled.
