Researchers must get permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Administration plus state regulators, and they need approval from the institution they work for. Then they have to get approval for the source of the actual drug - in the case of UCSF, researchers are using LSD that was manufactured years ago in Switzerland.

Interesting findings from a Johns Hopkins study, Mystical-type experiences occasioned by psilocybin mediate the attribution of personal meaning and spiritual significance 14 months later. The ramifications of this study are best summarized in this LA Times news article, A medical use for magic mushrooms. The findings in someway support what many have already known for years, shrooms can cause profound mystical experiences, and the spiritual effects can last more than a year. I'm excited about the mentions of studying the effects in treating drug dependence, and treating people with cancer. Have a good 'trip' this summer!
