FDA Says Watch Out For Fake Alli Capsules

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers about a counterfeit and potentially harmful version of Alli 60 mg capsules (120 count refill kit).  The counterfeit Alli product looks similar to the authentic product, with a few notable differences. The counterfeit Alli has:

• Outer cardboard packaging missing a “Lot” code;
• Expiration date that includes the month, day, and year (e.g., 06162010); authentic Alli expiration date includes only the month and year (e.g.,: 05/12);
• Packaging in a plastic bottle that has a slightly taller and wider cap with coarser ribbing than the genuine product;
• Plain foil inner safety seal under the plastic cap without any printed words; the authentic product seal is printed with “SEALED for YOUR PROTECTION”;
• Contains larger capsules with a white powder, instead of small white pellets.

Consumers who believe they have received counterfeit Alli are asked to contact the FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI) by calling 800-551-3989 or by visiting the OCI Web site (http://www.fda.gov/OCI).

EPA Attacks Nasty Bed Bugs!

I'm totally grossed out. Although I've never actually seen a bed bug, my skin crawls when I think about them. If you haven't seen one, checkout this WebMD Bed Bug Slideshow. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) just hosted its first meeting to figure out how to respond to the biggest bedbug outbreak since World War II. One of the problems with controlling the reddish-brown insects, according to researchers and the pest control industry, is that there are few chemicals on the market approved for use on mattresses and other household items that are effective at controlling bedbug infestations. Interestingly enough, because the registration of new pesticides takes so long, one thing the EPA could do is to approve some pesticides for emergency use. The pesticide industry will be pushing for federal funding for research into alternative solutions, such as heating, freezing or steaming the bugs out of bedrooms.

Free Health Picture Shows - My favorite is Lyme Disease

The folks at MedicineNet.com make this nice collection of educational picture shows (slides with educational text) available for free, MedicineNet.com Picture Shows. Some of the more popular shows include: adult skin problems, bad bugs, ringworm, shingles, and pink eye (conjunctivitis). This is just a sample, there are quite a few more. My favorite is the Lyme Disease picture show. I find these picture shows very effective because they include high quality photography and short and sweet explanatory text that is concise.
