Do Not Use Infant Sleep Positioners Due to the Risk of Suffocation - FDA Consumer Updates

Learn more:  Consumer Updates > Do Not Use Infant Sleep Positioners Due to the Risk of Suffocation:

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is reminding parents and caregivers not to put babies in sleep positioners. These products—sometimes also called “nests” or “anti-roll” products—can cause suffocation (a struggle to breathe) that can lead to death.

The two most common types of sleep positioners feature raised supports or pillows (called “bolsters”) that are attached to each side of a mat, or a wedge to raise a baby’s head. The positioners are intended to keep a baby in a specific position while sleeping and are intended for infants under 6 months old."

"In two new studies published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers delved into the coffee-drinking habits of more than 700,000 people in the U.S. and in 10 European countries. The scientists were particularly interested in looking at death rates among people of non-white populations. In both studies, people in these groups who drank more coffee tended to have a lower risk of dying during the study period than those who drank less coffee, or no coffee."

CRISPR kills HIV and eats Zika 'like Pac-man'. Its next target? Cancer | WIRED UK

Read the full article:  CRISPR kills HIV and eats Zika 'like Pac-man'. Its next target? Cancer | WIRED UK:

"These new enzymes are variants of a CRISPR protein, Cas13a, which the UC Berkeley researchers reported last September in Nature, and could be used to detect specific sequences of RNA, such as from a virus. The team showed that once CRISPR-Cas13a binds to its target RNA, it begins to indiscriminately cut up all RNA making it "glow" to allow signal detection."

Read the full article: Next up on the Trump crazy train: A man who thinks that a “Yelp for drugs” will do a better job than the FDA – Respectful Insolence:

"a third person under consideration for the position of FDA Commissioner: Balaji Srinivasan. I had never heard of him before, but I quickly learned that Srinivasan is also a Silicon Valley entrepreneur. Like O’Neill, he is not a scientist, but rather CEO of bitcoin start-up 21.com. He is also a partner at venture firm Andreessen Horowitz and teaches at Stanford University. His primary expertise is in the area of digital payments and computational biology, and his expertise in health regulation stems from a start-up company he co-founded, Counsyl Inc., which offers DNA screening, especially for people considering having children."
