Fireworks Safety & Injuries - Be Safe!

Take caution with fireworks!

Fireworks injuries sent more than 5,000 people to U.S. emergency departments in the 30 days surrounding the Fourth of July last year, with firecrackers, aerial explosives and homemade devices causing most of the harm, consumer safety experts said. About 60 percent of the estimated 8,700 people treated for injuries in 2012 were hurt between June 22 and July 22, according to new figures from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Follow the link below to view the US CPSC Fireworks injuries infographic.

UN World Drug Report 2013 - Alarming rise in NPS

The acronym NPS stands for new psychoactive substances.

World Drug Report: stability in use of traditional drugs, alarming rise in new psychoactive substances:

"This is an alarming drug problem - but the drugs are legal. Sold openly, including via the internet, NPS, which have not been tested for safety, can be far more dangerous than traditional drugs. Street names, such as "spice", "meow-meow" and "bath salts" mislead young people into believing that they are indulging in low-risk fun. Given the almost infinite scope to alter the chemical structure of NPS, new formulations are outpacing efforts to impose international control. While law enforcement lags behind, criminals have been quick to tap into this lucrative market. The adverse effects and addictive potential of most of these uncontrolled substances are at best poorly understood."

Hand Washing - Only 5% Do It Well Enough

The art of hand washing has yet to be mastered:

"According to a study led by Borchgrevink, only 5% of people washed their hands enough to kill infection and illness causing germs after using the bathroom. To make matters worse, 33% of hand washers didn't use soap, and 10% skipped the hygienic step altogether.

"It's horrifying," Borchgrevink says. "A majority didn't even make an effort.""
